Excellent 2.5" caddy ideal for hotswap cages - but beware the different versions
It's worth noting that Icy Dock produce 3 very similar models of 3.5" to 2.5" SATA caddies:MB882SP-1S-1B MB882SP-1S-2B MB882SP-1S-3BThe -2B version reviewed here is a 2 part unit with a removable lid and a solid base into which the 2.5" drive is inserted and pushed back against the SATA connector by hand. And this works perfectly: you can press the drive into the SATA connector with as much or as little force as you need until it hits the stop.Beware of the -1B version, however, which has a sliding base to automatically 'push' the drive into the SATA connector when the lid is closed - that version works very badly indeed.I buy lots of 2.5" to 3.5" SATA caddies for use in servers with 3.5" hotswap bays and these work perfectly. Performance is no different from a directly connected drive. I'm using SSDs in all of these units, so heat/noise isn't of particular concern, but if you were using a very warm spinning disk, you might need to provide additional cooling.

Upgrading an old Mac? You probably don't need this.
Bought for iMac upgrade. It's okay for what it is; I presume it fits a bit better into a desktop tower. If you're using it to upgrade an iMac (mine's a 2008 one), depending on what drive you're using I wouldn't bother. The Kingston SSD I'm using is about the size and weight of three or four credit cards stacked together. For that reason, you don't need an adapter to make it the size of the much, much heavier HDD, because it'll plug into the connector just fine and sit in the case. It's too light to wobble about much and it'll just have a lot of space around it (which probably helps keep the machine cool). I wasn't happy with the screw holes on this drive mount; for the Mac, you need to screw a clip mount from your old drive onto one side and two little posts on the other by screwing them in. The holes in the plastic case were too small, meaning I sheared off the end of my torx screwdriver trying to screw these bits in. So if I upgrade another Mac I won't bother with this or any of the other similar types.

Perfect. I was very disappointed with the very poor plastic version, also made by Icy Dock. So I was prepared to pay more, but had doubts about that company.I am now completely reassured that Icy Dock can make great products. This adapter is easy to use. There is a button to open it smoothly, so no prying or sliding or pushing is necessary. The SDD I use it for (an Intel) got into place perfectly well. The contacts get connected automatically as you close the lid (which results in a lever action, pushing the SSD against the connector with perfect alignment). There is also a sheet of transparent plastic that sits under the SSD, with a tab that you can grab to pull the drive out easily. It looks a bit expensive considering what goes into it. But it does the job perfectly, and fulfills a need that is not easy to meet. So that's five stars from this happy customer.Mine is used in a Mac Pro 3,1, where it fits impeccably.

I am satisfied with this product since it definitely has a solid aluminium bodyI still have the same complaint about this MB982SP-1S 2.5"/3.5" converter like the other one (MB382SP-3B). They don't always slide in, or fit it as easily as I wanted into the MB171SP-B 5.25" bay caddy (all these model codes are Icy Dock products)But since the original purpose for them is for enterprise usage in server rooms I guess and not for multiple operating system HDD/SSD booting (what I use these 2.5"/3.5" converters for), I won't complain anymore than this because that wouldn't be fairConclusion: I especially like the fact that it's easier to just put in the SSD after simply pushing a button (the one on this MB982SP-1S) and close on it rather than fitting screws to the SSD, or more precisely, it's even more efficient with this design. Well done Icy Dock, very innovativeI'm looking to buy more in the future, as I buy more SSDs

Solid and worth the extra price
I finally decided to use an ssd in my old Mac ProAfter doing some research I decided to go with this product. It arrived promptly and after opening the package I was surprised to see how easily it was to just slot the ssd into the converterNo screws or fiddling with anything, press a release button pop in and snap shutThe screw holes were also in exactly in the right place and the array slid smoothly back into the Mac ProExtremely pleased and if I get another ssd I will definitely be purchasing this item again
