Can it be used for measuing extremely thin coatings? (range of 0.1 mils - 0.6 mils?)

No. You always want at least one magnitude of resolution or more than what you’re trying to measure for the best accuracy. In this case the tool has a resolution of 0.1. Which means it can accurately read = to or > than 1.0. In order to accurately measure in the 0.1 to 0.6 range you need a resolution of 0.01 or better. Two magnitudes would be 0.001.

Does the guage come with a calibration certificate

Does not bring calibration certificate. What it brings are sheets of metal with different thicknesses of coating to compare the results of the meter with them.
