Dawa: The Story of a Stray Dog in Bhutan
I bought this book as a gift for a friend. While in Bhutan a few years ago, I bought a copy to read on the long plane ride home and found it to be a fabulous book! It exemplifies the people of Bhutan...gentle, hard working, devout and friendly. Dawa's determination to reach his destination could have been a metaphor for the determination of the people of Bhutan to always be free of outside influences. For example: two traffic lights were installed in the capital city of Themphu only to be removed because the people demanded so. They were content to return to the traffic cop directing traffic from his post in a kiosk in the middle of the intersection.I highly recommend this book. It describes the beauty of Bhutan where "Gross National Happiness" is the country's motto and, the people are always smiling.

Touching story, very insightful
This is a very sweet story about a very special dog. It combines themes of adversity and kindness, along with a particular worldview found among Buddhist societies. The story and characters give insight into the national character of Bhutan - the Kingdom of Happiness. Parts of the story will make you smile and parts may make you cry; it it is likely that some parts may help you to see yourself.
