more annoying than a real issue but considering the price we ...
Knife is everything that has been written in earlier reviews, thick, tough, sharp. My particular knife had a flaw on the sharpening grind on the tip, which was more than likely a quality control issue. Small notch, more annoying than a real issue but considering the price we pay for a quality USA made knife, it should be perfect. Having said that, love the knife. Beefy enough that it could be used as a last resort pry bar.Now to the sheath: it sucks. You should only buy this knife if you don't want the sheath and are planning on carrying the blade pirate style in your teeth or you are going to make or purchase a new one. The nylon/ cordura sheath does have snaps on the retainer straps instead of the old Velcro, which is an improvement. The real problem is the plastic insert the knife slides into does not fit this knife. The knife rattles freely in the sheath even with the retaining straps fastened and without the straps, the knife falls right out. I knew from earlier reviews that the sheath was junk so not a deal breaker for me. Just received the knife today so I am going to contact Ontario knives about the blade flaw, should be able to get it replaced or fixed, just sucks to have to do so.

Better than a BK2 (in my humble opinion)
I wish I had known about this knife before I bought a BK2. Yes, the BK2 is a fine product, but this Ontario model is better! They weigh about the same (one pound) and both are extremely sturdy, probably unbreakable in any situation other than deliberate abuse, at 1/4 of an inch thick. But the Ontario has a more useful blade shape, I think. And it is over an inch longer. My research has convinced me that, as good as 1095 steel is, 5160 is stronger yet. The BK2 comes with these handles called "grivory", and while it is plenty tough, it also tends to be a bit slippery. Micarta handles for the BK2 cost an extra 40 to 45 dollars! Well, guess what-----the Ontario has micarta handles as standard equipment! That alone makes the Ontario the better buy. Fit and finish is excellent, but my RD6 wasn't particularly sharp as received. I had to make a few passes over the edge with an AccuSharp to set the angle, then maybe 30 or 40 pulls through my Rada sharpener to hone it, and I ended with an edge that is just super sharp. (Yeah, I suppose those very expensive sharpeners work well once you learn how to use them, but I'm telling you that the two items mentioned above will sharpen about any knife made and cost less than 20 bucks. I have a few dozen knives and can get a great edge of any and all of them with the AccuSharp and, especially, the Rada. Buy 'em and see for yourself.) Now, to be fair we have to compare sheaths. The BK2 comes with a nice Kydex sheath, which, in my case, held the knife so tightly that I could barely get it to release it. But with boiling water I was able to soften the plastic and spread the top open and thus correct that problem. Once molded, the Kydex will stay in its new position. But why should I have to fix the sheath so that it works well? C'mon KaBar--sell decent sheaths with your knives! The Ontario has a sheath made of a nylon-like material and while it isn't particularly attractive, it is well made, has a nice pouch, a plastic liner, molle straps all over the thing and two nice retention straps that have snaps and are adjustable. So yes, I wish I had known about the RD6 before I bought a BK2!

Love it...I might have to buy a few other Ontario knives
The quality is so impressive. I have yet to get out camping and really beat on it, but I'm confident it will take anything I can throw at it. It feels great in the hand. Really cool to see such a quality made in USA product. The sheath is ok, better than I thought, but I will still be buying a kydex sheath. There are two straps with snaps and the top strap does not fit, not that I would use it anyway.I did have to sharpen it and put an edge on it when it came. I expected this, as it is common. I'm fine with it.I bought this for using in the yard, garage, and while camping. The 6" is a great size, but I wish I would have gotten the 7". This think is huge, what is an extra inch. I might buy the 9" just to see it. Really, I might buy the 9", 7" and 4" just because they are so awesome.I'm new to collecting big fixed blades but I'm hooked.

Great knife, highly recommend
i love this knife, i wanted a nice 1/4 inch thick blade and this is perfect, i will admit however that the handles are somewhat blocky like other people have said, and they were sort of "frilly" where they were touching the tang, but since you can unscrew the scales from the tang i sanded them clean and it looks fine now, i didn't feel as though this type of thing would warrant a loss of a star because it in no way effects performance, the grind from the factory was perfectly even, and quite sharp, i didn't try the paper thing that i always see people doing because thats not what this type of knife is for but I'm sure it would pass, also the sheath is wayyyyyyyy too long, i don't really care that much about the fact that it rattles around in there like others have said because of the two snaps that hold it in the sheath (i do like when it is a tight fit, like with ontario's air force knife, you don't even need to close the clasp and i am confident it would not fall out, i appreciate a tight fit but the two buckle nylon sheath that comes with the RD6 is fine), but it is way too long, it is obvious to me that it is intended for multiple knifes, like i said though, this is a burly knife that i am not afraid will break while camping/ hiking, it is heavy but if you are worried about the 1 lb this knife adds "weighing you down" while you're hiking than you should probably hit the gym a little more, all things considered this is a terific knife and i love the fact that it is made in the USA, totally worth the money and my new favorite knife, i really like the way it looks too, i like the writing above the handle on both sides as well as the lighting bolt on the blade, it wasn't too gaudy looking like i was afraid of.
