Motorola Moto G Plus - Unlocked Phone - Retail Packaging - White

{(((1 year update, well 11 months))) : this moto g4 plus is still going strong. no problems with it to report, still charges fast and holds a charge all day. } Ok so I've had this Moto G4 Plus (64GB storage with 4GB RAM) for 24 hours, and so this Isn't going to be a extensive review, just some things I've noticed... First of all, the build and feel of the phone is very good, not super premium like some $600 + phones, but its still very good. the fit is tight and uniform, no gaps around the screen or back cover or anything. the back cover snaps on and off without problems. the phone looks to be very well made. The android system takes up almost 10GB of storage, leaving the user with about 54.5 GB. CPU-Z shows there is 3643 MB of RAM The buttons for power and volume feel great, make a nice little clicky feel when you push them, and the power button is textured for an easy way to feel the difference between them. the finger print scanner, is very useful, (although it doesn't serve as a button for anything) it wakes the phone up and unlocks it super fast. I would estimate about 1/4 of a second or faster. So far finger print scanner is great, way better than i expected. The screen looks great, full HD 1080P, colors have a warm look to them , the whites are not as blue looking as my Samsung phones screen. IT is a full 5.5 inch display, and yes the buttons are on screen, But can go away in certain apps, to give you the full screen to use, like when watching videos for instance. the sound is very good, although it only has one front facing speaker at the top. it is loud and clear. Call quality has been excellent, and when calling an iphone 6, about two or three feet away, with both phones on speaker. the Moto G4 Plus had no signs of feedback, or echoing, indicating it does an excellent job of noise cancellation. the iphone 6 however sounded like a horror movie. The UI (user interface) is slick and basic android. fast and responsive. the Moto gestures work well as far as the double twist for camera, and the double chop for flashlight. I have not tested the others yet. Supposedly this phone is Water and dust resistant, but i will not be testing that, for obvious reasons. The camera seems to be great so far, low light photos look pretty good, and there is even a pro mode that lets you tweak all the aspects of the camera. if you hold down the shoot button, it takes photos in rapid succession, pretty cool feature. This phone also lets you record slow motion videos which is fun. Some of the cons of this phone i can think of, are: No NFC, not a big deal to me personally, because I never plan on using android pay anytime soon at least, and I never bump my phone to share stuff with other people. I've had NFC on past phones for years, and never used it, except to try it out to see if it worked. No Magnetometer / Compass. I'm not sure of the full implications of not having a compass are, but GPS and navigation still work, because they rely on the GPS sensors, this phone also uses GLONASS, which is just the Russian version of the United states GPS system, twice as many satellites, means twice the reliability, and more accurate and faster positioning. Since there is no Compass, google sky map will not work correctly, which is big bummer for me. ON THE OVER HEATING ISSUE: I live in south Texas, and tested this phone outside with the camera app, taking dozens of photos and using CPU-Z i never noticed temps over 55 C on any of the sensors, most were about 50 C or below. also the camera app never started lagging and stuttering. I will update this review if anything changes, and after a month or two when i have spent more time with the phone. EDIT: after using this phone for 4 days now. I bumped it from a 4 to a 5 star. The battery life is very good. And easily last all day. In fact I've had the phone with me at work now since 7 am this morning, using it off and on pretty often. It is now 2:30 pm and I still have 70% left. Pretty impressive. The screen looks great in full sun with full brightness setting, no problems at all. The more I use this phone the more I like it.

Just an update after using a few months. This is a great no frills phone. It fits well in hand and I have actually found I like it day to day better than my LG V10. If you loved the Nexus 5, this is a phone for you. This is a really good phone with the caveat "for the money". And that probably isn't a fair thing to say. It works great and feels good in the hand and is smooth, has an excellent camera and just runs well. It is unlocked and works with no problems on my T-Mobile 4G LTE network. Never owned a Moto phone. Have always purchased the carrier phones with the exception of an alcatel 3s I bought for one of my family members. I think if you are looking for a relatively inexpensive option to the $ 600 to $900 devices this is a good option. It is missing some features I've liked in the past like "knock" to wake or shut off the screen. I originally purchased an Alcatel 4s during pre-order but it would not play well with T-Mobile 4G LTE. I actually liked the features and screen of the 4s better than this Moto G phone but it was slippery. And they were about the same price. It does not have a lot of cool features or added apps but it works well which some people will like. Pretty much a Google phone although I've added some things I like and that is the beauty and fun of the Android world. The camera is great - and takes much better pics than the Alcatel 4S.and has really given my LG V10 a run for its money. Pictures are accurate, software works fast, quick pics turn out well. Speaker is average but it does face forward and that makes it clearer sounding and not as easily covered by your hand. The battery life this week seems to be very good, and idle management works well with 6.01. Gets me thru a full day without charging and the fast charge gets it charged up as advertised. Call quality has been excellent but I did notice that the volume was not as loud as my V10 or 4S. Hopefully they can issue an update that will make the call volume a little louder. all other apps and music are plenty loud. Wifi and LTE the same. No NFC which is weird. Phone feels good in hand and isn't difficult to operate one handed, unlike my V10. and they make a lot of nice cases already including the Diztronic and the BENTOBEN 2 Piece case (this is a great case for the MOTO G) - many more good case choices than the Alcatel. Also glass screen protector from Mr. Shield is super. Went on perfect and adds a nice feel to the Moto G screen. Finger print scanner is quick and responsive but I wish the scanner also turned off the screen. It sits in a great place and I am used to the integrated scanner on the V10 that turns off and wakes the phone. No stuttering or problems with performance. I think the 4gb RAM and 64 gb on board storage help. The phone does get hot occasionally when I'm uploading or downloading files so I'm going to watch that. I've read the stories about camera video overheat but haven't taken a lot of lengthy video. This device has some stiff competition in that price range including the One Plus 3 and Axxon 7. Both about $100 more but much more robust specs. It reminds me a bit of the original Nexus 5. Affordable, clean, unlocked and likes pure Android (with a few Moto features left in the mix) And just does what it's supposed to.with a much better camera, more memory/storage options and much better battery life. Would recommend this device to people that are looking for quality brand at a very fair price, with no frills /no bloat phone that works well on any network, has good battery life, easy to charge, huge storage, nice screen, excellent camera, good in hand, and is at an excellent price point.

Phone is now turning itself off several times every day - battery will be at 20%, 40%, even 50% but it turns off and won't let me turn it back on until I plug it in. Also, it constantly shows that it's charging now - the little battery icon on the top right always has the charging symbol.This phone has basically become trash in less than 2 months. I would not recommend. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I received the replacement phone a little over a month ago. If I hadn't lost track of time I would be sending this one back as well, but since it is past 30 days I doubt they will take it. So let me say this: this phone works really well straight out of the box. You charge it, set it up with your gmail accounts, etc. and if you are just using it for a phone call here and some texting there it works great and the battery lasts all day. HOWEVER, I did not buy a 64GB phone to only use for calling and texting. If you are buying a phone with more space because you want apps/games on it, then this is NOT the phone for you. I have to charge my phone 2-3 times a day and if you use it at all while it's charging it messes it up even more - taking forever to charge and then not getting as good of a charge (a trick I've found is if you had to use it while plugged in, when you are done using it, unplug the cord from the phone for a few seconds then plug it back in and it'll go back into turbo charge mode). With this phone I haven't had the overheating issues that I had with the one I sent back, so that one was probably defective. However, this one has turned off for seemingly no reason twice in two days now. Again, this is an issue I've had with phones that are a year or two old - it's completely unacceptable from a phone that is slightly over a month old. One little thing that I didn't mention in my earlier review is that you can set a separate ringtone for each contact, but it does not give you an option to set a separate text tone. In fact, all notification sounds are the same so you get the same sound whether you get a text message, email, etc. I turned the sounds off for email because I get too much to be having my phone go off every time an email comes on, but if you want to be able to have a separate sound for emails and for text messages, that is not an option. I've had phones that cost less than this that allowed you to set a different sound and even vibration pattern for different contacts for text messaging. As a parent, much of my communication is done through text messaging because talking on the phone is difficult with a kiddo around and also my home doesn't get good phone reception. I will say that the fingerpint sensor at least keeps my kiddo off of my phone and the wrist flick flashlight has come in useful a few time. Those features definitely aren't enough for me to overlook all of the issues I've had with this phone, though. --------------------------------------------------------------- Edit: They are sending me a replacement. I am hoping I just received a dud and that the replacement will be perfect. I will update my review once I've received it and had a chance to test it out. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are some things I like about this phone, but I'm going to start with the cons because that's what I really want to know when I'm looking at buying a phone - what reasons are there not to buy it? Cons: * I've had battery life issues since day 1. That's right - I bought this phone in large part because it is supposed to have "all day" battery life. I read this in the ads and in reviews, but my personal experience says that it is only "all day" if you don't use it at all. Otherwise, it's about 7 hours. I don't like having to charge my phone in the middle of the day and I know some people are unable to do so and need to have their phone working. * I've had overheating issues since at least the second week. The phone gets very warm when it's charging, so if you try to use it while it's charging, it is likely to freeze up on you. It also overheats and stops working if you are in a warm car. It's only gotten up to the 80s so far - can only imagine how dead this thing would be if I try to use it when it gets up to the 100s. * I've had freezing up issues since at least the second week. This issue does not only exist when the phone is hot. Sometimes I have to turn the screen off and turn it back on in order to restore functionality. Earlier today the google search bar decided not to work - couldn't click in it at all for at least 30 minutes even after turning screen on and off a couple times. * There are times when the phone just goes completely crazy. I generally think of this as an overheating issue, but I've had this happen when the phone is not hot at all. It'll start typing random letters on it's own or opening apps or switching between screens.. basically, it's acting like I'm doing something when I'm not even touching it. All of these issues are issues I was having with my previous phone which is why I was looking for a new phone in the first place. I certainly wasn't looking to spend $250 on a phone that has the same issues. I've been hoping that it would start working well like others state it does - perhaps it needed an upgrade or something, but no such case. I'm going to have to return this phone and go back to searching for a phone that actually works. Pros: * Really handy flick of the wrist action to turn on flashlight. This is really nice when you are looking for something quickly in the dark or are fumbling for keys or something. Not having to unlock the phone and find your flashlight app is definitely cool - this is the feature my son tells everyone about. * Equally neat wrist action to turn on camera/ switch camera view. You can (fairly) easily turn on the camera to take a quick photo and can just as easily change it to take a selfie. The camera also sometimes takes multiple pictures to capture the best shot (I'm sure this is an option, but I haven't played with the camera enough to try to turn it off and generally it does seem to help)... the one downside to the camera that I've found is that there doesn't appear to be a quick way to get from the camera to the photo you just took - you have to get out of the camera and go find "photos".. this may be because you can turn on the camera without unlocking the phone and they don't want just anyone to be able to get into your photos, but I would still like the option (put in the link and then just make you do your fingerprint or whatever to actually view the photos). * Price is pretty good for a 64 GB internal memory phone.. if everything worked as it should. * Although there are a number of really nice phone cases you can buy for this phone, it's tempting to leave it case-less. The phone looks nice and has a good feel in the hand without a case. After putting on a case, it really felt a bit wide for me to comfortably hold. I've gotten used to it, but I do prefer something a bit narrower. One thing that's really difficult to put in pro or con is the fingerprint scanner. Sometimes it works great even when I put my finger at an odd angle that I know I didn't program it for, other times it doesn't recognize my finger even when perfectly positioned. You can program different fingers and it has you do each one several times and makes you move it a bit each time so you should be less likely to have to position your finger in one exact way to unlock your phone. I kept adding new fingers because I'd be doing something and find myself reaching over and trying to unlock my phone with one I hadn't programmed yet - one I hadn't realized I would need to unlock my phone with. Also, it won't recognize your fingerprint if you have any amount of moisture on your hands - you need to dry them really well before trying to unlock the phone. All in all, I'd say it's a pro, but it is really annoying when it doesn't function properly. I really wanted to like this phone. I desperately needed a new one but this was not an impulse buy - I spent quite a bit of time researching different phones in different price brackets, reading CNET reviews, watching youtube reviews, etc. This one seemed to be a good buy. I may have just gotten a dud, but I'm really disappointed with the issues I've had.

My initial impression of the Moto G4 Plus after a few days of use is pretty good. Coming from an older LG G2, one of the first things I noticed is the larger size of 5.5” compared to the smaller 5.2” of the LG. On paper, this difference does not seem like much, but in real world experience it does make it somewhat more difficult to hold and handle with the Moto. Pulling and storing the Moto in the front pant pocket is more difficult as well, but it’s not a deal breaker for me, but more of something to get use to as many phones seem to be around the 5.5” size these days. When it comes to grip, the matte back of the phone is somewhat grippy but not quite enough for me. I prefer to use a phone without a case, but I will be using a case on this phone mainly because of the smooth bezels on the side of the phone which just make it a bit to slippery for daily use. The build quality seems top notch for a phone in the $250-$300 price range. I like that the back cover can easily be pried open for access to the SIM card(micro SIM slot with an included adapter to fit a nano SIM) plus a Micro SD up to 128GB of storage. With the 64GB model, there is plenty of space for files, music, photos, apps etc. but it’s nice to see the optional storage made available. It’s a bummer that the battery is non-removable though. The ports(3.5mm and micro usb) are accessible, but I would have preferred that the headphone jack was placed on the bottom with the charging port. The screen seems durable with thin bezels on the side, perhaps a little too thin for me, but not a deal breaker though. There is a slight lip around the screen that allows you to place the phone face-down on a flat surface without concern of scratches. I do like the front-facing speaker at the top, which gets very loud at full volume without sounding tinny or crackly when playing audio. However, I did notice that the speaker phone did not sound as rich and full when it came to phone calls which is disappointing. The power and volume buttons on the right side are good and clicky with the power button having a textured surface compared to the smooth surface of the volume rocker. The only slight con for me is that the buttons are placed too close to each other and seemed switched in placement compared to many other phones out there. The fingerprint sensor on the front works exceptionally well. It’s accurate and fast. It’s probably twice as fast as my ipad Air 2 sensor. There is almost no delay and works in .5 seconds in my testing. I wish the sensor was placed on the back of the phone perhaps where the Moto emblem dimple is, but that is personal preference. One thing to note is that the fingerprint sensor serves no other purpose other than to unlock the phone. I wish Lenovo had built some other features into the fingerprint sensor like other companies have done and they seemed to have scrimped on this. When it comes to Marshmallow 6.0, I’m impressed with the features and with the additional custom hand gesture features for example that Moto brings to the phone. It does seem a little light in custom features compared to what LG has done on their phones though. There is next to no bloatware on the phone which is nice but it does lack some common apps like a calculator and a music player, but this can be easily remedied by downloading free apps from the Play Store. Overall, the phone operates smoothly while scrolling, swiping, texting, and switching between apps. Texting or swiping on the included Google keyboard app works really well, which is a definite plus for me. Multi-tasking on the phone works like a breeze. The Qualcomm 617 octa core processor and 4gb RAM tackles most tasks fairly well for a mid-range processor. Casual gaming works well enough and seems power-efficient thanks to Android 6.0’s power-saving features. The full HD screen is bright and vibrant and works well enough for me. It won’t rival any OLED screen from Samsung or the like, but then again it’s less than half the price of those flagship phones, so it's not expected to. I’m not sure yet how well the brightness is in broad daylight, but I suspect at full brightness it will be sufficient for me. The turbo-charging seems to work well as advertised too. Overall, this is a nice 2016 phone with a current OS, 32GB storage, 4GB RAM, speedy processor, full HD screen, timely security updates, Android N upgrade-able and is virtually free of bloatware. At the $250-$300 price range, this is really a no-brainer for a budget to mid-range phone and should be on any person’s shopping list. With only a few minor cons for me, I still recommend the Moto G4 Plus for anyone looking for an affordable phone. 4.5/5 stars.

Over 2-1/2 Years Update! Bought 10/16 and is now 5/19. I am more and more pleased. Stability is excellent, must have been an Update. Currently running Android 7.0. Screen, Battery Life/Charging/Speed are all like new. Rest of family getting new phones (Moto X 4th Gen), but I just have no need to. Because of them. I figured I would see when I bought mine. So glad I bought this! 1 YEAR UPDATE: Still very pleased. I had a hangup with a major update, but found key combination online to reboot and it all settled out in an hour. Aside from that, performance has been first rate. Love the screen size, resolution, storage and Ram. Avg Ram use is 1.6- gb of 4 GB Fingerprint reader works well, makes it very convenient. For my purchase price of $299, it can't be beat. Compares favorably with other "locked" phones selling for several hundred more. All I did to get this working when it was bought, was transfer my SIM. I'll br back to the MOTO G Series when i need another phone. If there is one feature I miss from my previous phone (LG G2 or G4) it's an IR Blaster, as I do lots of A/V equipment, but that is a rare feature everywhere. The MOTO G5+ is on sale for about $225 and the G6 is out now or will be in a matter of days. The 24 Hour Review: Loving the 64 GB + 4 GB Ram for just $299. Excellent quality, nothing second rate about fit or finish or feel. Nice buttons, beautiful screen resolution and color, easy to use all around. Performance seems better than my LG G2 16GB+2GB Ram I was using (touch screen was getting flaky. $650 Phone bought on closeout at T-Mobile for about $450 about 2-1/2 years ago btw). i like the minimalist approach to software and OS this offers. OS is just fine. I did all my setup on Wi-Fi. Downloaded dozens of Apps and Databases i use on a daily basis. No issues at all. Inserted my MicroSIM (Glad it was same size, saved time effort and money for me). Instantly had service! T-Mobile. Best call quality I've ever had as well. Real clear. I transferred an unneeded 64 GB MiroSDHX for my Docs and Music. had to press the Charging Icon to see other options, and set to MTP. Transferred 30 GB via USB 2.0 (a Card Reader would have saved time!) and all seems well. best phone I ever had. I don't need NFC, would have liked IR for a TV Remote as i do a lot of A/V work, but I have no disappointments with this $299 Smartphone. It is a great value. P.S. I've read it supports 128 GB Card, and I've read it supports 256 GB as well. I do not know for sure. I have a TOTAL of 128 right now and will not need to expand anytime soon.

This is the first smartphone that I have owned and so far I like it. Even though this is my first smartphone I still know how to use it because of owning a couple of tablets. This phone seems to run smoothly and starts up fast. I like that it has a finger print scanner that you can use it to lock your phone. As far as the specs for this phone goes it seems to be a good deal for it's price. I also like some of the things that Moto did with this as far as the hand gestures that allow you to go straight to something without unlocking and searching for them. Such as making somewhat of a chopping action with it in hand will turn on the flash light, which is bright, and twisting your wrist quickly will open up the camera. The version of Android that this came with is very basic so you don't need to be worried about there being a bunch of bloatware on it to slow it down or waste space. As far as cell phone networks go this is one of the few unlocked phones that I have seen that will work with just about any network provider. I use att which I read a couple of reviews where people had issues getting their LTE to work but I didn't have an issue with this at all. I went to an att store to get my sim card though. The size of the phone isn't that bad to me either it's a little bit bigger that my flip phone was but not near as thick thankfully. The screen is bright even on a low setting so far I haven't had a bright sunny day to see how well it works in direct sunlight. The camera's take great pictures too. The sound is plenty loud enough but don't expect a stereo effect from this phone since it only has the one speaker which is fine with me. Charging on this phone is extremely fast only takes about an hour and a half to charge to 100%. One thing I'll need to keep my eye on though is that it seems to get a little warm while charging. Other than that this phones seems to work great. I mainly bought this phone because I was looking for a good budget phone and this one caught my eye along with a couple others but I ended up going with this one because of research and readying good reviews. I'll update my review if anything happens that would cause me to change my opinion on this phone. My advice though if your looking for a good budget phone and one that leaves you with a good amount of options in cell service providers than this is the phone you've been looking for.

I've had this phone for about 10 days now and overall I like what I got with the price I paid. I've been using a Samsung Note 4 and it started to slow down a lot so I wanted to get a new unlocked phone that works on both GSM and CDMA, the Moto G4 Plus is one of the few choices with reliable reputation, same specs and larger screen than G5 but much cheaper. Pros: very sharp and clear screen, stock Android can be upgraded to 7; very few pre-installed apps; fairly fast with its 4GB RAM and 64 GB Memory. Camera is good, photos are sharp with pretty good color saturation and you can adjust brightness of photo to be taken right on the screen. The finger print recognition is very fast. It takes any carriers’ card and you don’t need to worry about compatibility issue. I am going to go overseas and will use local phone card and this phone will definitely work for me. Cons: Phone is large for the size of the screen because of the big top and bottom; would be better to not have the operational icons on the screen since it does have enough space outside the screen to fit them. Call quality is so so I think. I am still trying to find an app that can root the phone so I can get some apps to work such as screen shot. Overall I think it’s a great buy for the money and I will recommend it. Addtional comment after using it for a month: For a phone with 4GB RAM, you expect fast start or shut off, however this phone is very slow, that’s quite surprising; When my Note 4 was new it was very fast to run apps and multi functions, and it has only 3 GB RAM, even now my old Note 4 is just about as fast as this Moto, so go figure why; I just made a long trip going northeast, and touring big cities with this Moto G4 Plus, part of the trip I rented a car and drove using Google Map on the phone. The biggest disappointment with the phone during the trip is the battery life. I didn’t constantly use it, but still the battery can only last for about 7 hours and many times I had to find a coffee shop to rest so I could charge the phone, otherwise I would get lost at the new place, right? Since the battery is built in you can’t take a spare battery, and I didn’t take a portable battery since many airlines don’t allow it onboard now. Even when I was driving the battery died and I had to find restaurant to charge it so I could continue using Google Map. Worse, the charging is really slow, 20 min you get about 18% charged! The phone also often gets very hot and you can just feel the heat burning through pant’s pocket. The Note 4 could last for at lest a day and a half when it was new. So I will drop my rating to 3 star from 4 star because of the poor battery life and charging time.

Great phone that works extremely well. So far I have had this phone for about 3 months and I can say that the speed is amazing and the battery definitely last you one whole day, I used it about every other hour for an hour, the fast charging is amazing so the phone is fully charged well within the hour, probably within half an hour. Fingerprint reader works decently as the phone will not recognize your fingerprint if it has been in the water too long and has begun to turn into grape fingers. Make sure to set up multiple finger print patterns for even the same finger so unlocking will be easy. The chopping motion to turn on the flashlight is a great way to amaze people when you do it as if anyone could do it on their phones. One time my phone told me that it had a user interface error and restarted after that completely randomly. After that one incident the phone works perfectly well as if nothing had ever happened. The only other problems that are noted are some apps crashing, but this issue is likely with the app itself, not the phone. When an app crashes the phone does a nice job of notifying you that the app crashed instead of kicking you out of the app without notification. Also one last point to make is that this camera on the front and back are amazing. Everyone who has used my phone's camera claims that it makes them "look" better and give it a definite approval compared to their iPhone and other android cameras.
