Solid Textbook
This is a solid chemistry text book for home schoolers. That's the opinion of my husband, a biochemistry major who is now an anesthesiologist. Our son used this for his 10th grade science. If your child is self-directed and learns well from reading texts, this is a good selection. Our son did struggle with a few concepts and had to repeat a module or two, but the instruction was there. He just needed to be able to slow down to digest it. Actually, he liked the text so much, when he started a college-level chemistry course, I bought a new textbook for his brother so he could keep the original with his notes and scribbles for his own reference. Of course, the home experiments are only as good as the student wants to make them ...

Great curriculum.
We love sonlight curriculum and they use apologia for their science. So far it has been a big hit with our kids.

Third edition better understood by average student
I teach science classes at home school co-ops. Homeschool students meet once a week and class time is spent in experiments and clarifying concepts. This means that students must be able to get most of their knowledge through reading the text on their own. I have used the Apologia curriculum for years. I have taught Chemistry using both the 2nd edition written by Dr, Wile and now the 3rd edition (3rd year with new edition). I find both editions relevant and useful. I can say that with the 2nd edition I would have up to 14 students attending tutoring sessions weekly in order to get through homework problems and prepare for tests. With the 3rd edition i have one or two students occasionally needing extra help. The first printing of the 3rd edition was horrible but the errors have been corrected in subsequent printings. I think the 3rd edition is better understood by a wider range of students ( mathophobes to mathophiles).

too much text
The graphics are beautiful, but there is way too much text. These books from Apologia would serve as a reference, but far too wordy for teaching HS and MS science courses. I would not recommend. We use only because we have to as part of our curriculum.

I have the first printing of the 3rd edition and ...
I have the first printing of the 3rd edition and it is riddled with mistakes; mostly in the practice problems. If you buy it, make sure you get the 2nd printing of the 3rd edition. I believe the first printing has at least 70 mistakes. It is very frustrating when you are working your way through a problem to be confronted with numbers that come from nowhere. The publisher does have corrections on their website, but do yourself a favor and make sure you buy the 2nd printing.
