Haystack & Little Haystack - This long hike, 18.3 miles round trip, took a total hiking time of 10 hours and 42 minutes. Most of the hike, about 14.2 miles, is relatively easy compared to the rest which is very steep and rugged no matter which trail you choose for the ascent/descent. Although there are several different trails leading to Haystack, they are all quite long and equally rugged. At 4,960 feet in altitude, Haystack is ranked 3rd highest of the 46 High Peaks. Many regard it as number 1 for views, especially of nearby MT Marcy. The end of July is recommended for day hikes due to longer sunlit hours and fewer black flies. Be prepared.
