Voracious Appetite for Weeds
April 2019I am now starting my 3rd season with this cutter head. I've attached two pictures, one with the teeth worn down and one with the replacement teeth installed. Before I purchased the head, I read some reviews complaining about how quickly the teeth dulled, bent, and/or wore down. Well, they do wear, but this is the first replacement set I've installed. Two full seasons of hard cutting. We have rock, chain link, brick, stumps, rocks that like to play hide and seek and other surprising things that I run across. The head was still effective with half of the teeth worn away. It is much more effective with the new teeth. Two years plus and I'm very happy with this unit.I have used this now for about 20+ hours of actual weed eating. It is mounted on a Sthil FS45. I don't think that I would want to mount it on anything smaller, but it is quite effective on my unit. The initial load of string that came with the unit did not last as long as I expected and I was forced to use some .105mm string that I had on hand. Although I had to replace the smaller string frequently, it was not as often as I expected and performed better than string alone. During this initial usage, I was working my way through 5' Johnson grass, woody weeds, thistle, honey suckle, small saplings, large polk plants, and other weeds.Having read the reviews about the teeth not holding up, I was cautious about banging it into things such as rocks, trees, and chain link fence. Working methodically, read slowly, actually allowed the head to work more effectively and seemed to be easier on me. So far, I haven't experienced bent or broken teeth on the teeth ring. As other reviews state, it does require you to take a little more time ( a second or two) to let it spin up to speed and will bog down a marginal machine if you push it too quickly. After my initial use of the .105mm line, I have acquired a supply of the .155mm line and it is lasting as long as I would expect and does a good job. The heavier line is best used in large weed situation and the smaller line seems to work better when trimming grass and edging along walks.A word of caution, the WeedShark will throw cuttings and chunks of weeds more than just a string head. My preferred safety equipment is a screen face shield over safety glasses, long sleeved shirt, heavy jeans. I also am more aware to keep anyone else 15' to 20' away from where I'm working. All in all, I'm very pleased with the performance of the WeedShark. It does what it says it will do if you use it properly.

Really cuts the mustard!
Really chops down the scrub oak saplings. Vibrates quite a bit until the speed gets up and because it is so heavy, the trimmer (4-Stroke Craftsman) struggles to get it spun up. You have to take your time with this tool. Best technique I have found is to rapidly sweep the head side to side to prevent it from wrapping up in the branches. The string lasts a decent amount of time...much better than standard string. You do, however, need needle nose pliers to install the string to bend it up after initially putting it through the holes...perhaps a design update is needed to put a ramp behind the mounts to guide the string to bend up. Happy with my purchase.

Awesome product
Amazing product I purchased this for my gas powered Echo weed eater to help cut down my back yard it was covered in 4' high dried weeds looked a lot like wheat. This thing made easy work cut everything down fast no messing with trimmer string. For harder brush we have tumble weeds just put it on top of it and go down it will just chew it up like nothing. One thing of caution you have to be careful around wires. I have an electric fence and the strings will grab the wire and wrap it around the shaft instantly very unforgiving but the design works. I just had to unscrew the blade off and then pull the wire off. Highly recommend this product.

Not what I expected
I ordered this trimmer head from Amazon, and right at delivery things went partially wrong. the package had been opened and scotch taped back together. None of the hardware was included, meaning all the various nuts, etc for different trimmers. There were NO instructions other than what was on outside of packaging. It only came with the trimmer line that was on the head. The trimmer head itself looked unused, and I had a correct nut from another head, so I kept it.I have had many line trimmer heads over the years and have not been happy with any of them other than one that used a chain, but they do not sell those any more. This looked like it might be the answer to all of the line problems I have encountered. It is the most expensive head I have ever purchased, and after a number of of hours of use, I am not completely sold on it. Be aware that you will go through a lot of line. The line that came on it failed rather quickly and I only had a spool of .130 line which is what I used. it requires over 2 feet of line for each line change, and sometimes I would only make it 3' in medium weeds before the lines were completely gone from the point of connection on the head. I wondered it the head was cutting its own line. The line hits the weed and is pulled into the blade, possibly the blade is cutting into the line and pulling it from the hub? The line does not seem to wear down shorter and shorter like normal, it just disappears entirely. Yesterday I trimmed about 150' of fence line and went through 8 sets of line, or about 18' of line, or about 8.3' of weeds along the fence for each foot of line used. You will need to carry a pair of pliers or something along the way to change the line. It is not an easy or quick process. When replacing line, you need something to pry the couple of inches of line left in the hub, it is in tight fit The heavy line is very stiff, and awkward to handle. As you insert the first line into the head, you need something to pry out the bottom so that it will curve and slide in, then you wrestle the line into the remaining holes.I had thought the concept was good in that the line supposedly pulled the weed into the blade for cutting. My experience is that if you are on a thicker weed that is not cut immediately by the line, once you get to the point of the blade cutting the stalk, the line is completely gone. Off course if this is the first weed to cut, it means the line lasted only one weed. Maybe if there had been a manual, I might have been better informed as to usage practices. I think some of the reviews indicate that people are using this without line, just the blade cutting weeds. I was disappointed in the cutting ability of the blade. If it were the intention to just use the blade, I would install a brush cutting blade and go to work. Of course the brush cutting blade is a fearsome item that you need to be very careful with, but I would not want to run into anything with either one.Overall, as a line cutter, it is no different than any other and has the standard line problems with the addition of difficult line change, and more line usage with each change. If it is used just with the cutting blade, then it is inferior to a brush cutting blade, although possibly safer to an extent.

This thing works!
This is the best overall blade I have found for cleaning fence rows where I cannot mow. I used it so much I wore out the metal blade but that is replaceable too. It does good with large plants and even small woody plants but also does a good job with the grass because of the string. By far the fastest thing I have found for that application. Order more string because it does wear out rather quickly if you push it as hard as I do. I ordered it on a roll.
