Do you need an arduino for this kit to work?
does this come with any sort of thermal paste to attach the heat sinks, or what is a good one to buy?

Not safe out of the box.

These Ramps 1.4 boards are a fire hazard, I had read how these connectors can melt but I assumed that that was only in conditions that were less than ideal. I hooked this board up to my 3D printer and genuine Prusa MK2B heat bed direct from Prusa Research and within 30 minutes of operation the connector had melted and when I looked to see where the smoke was coming from and actually saw a small flame. After the thing had cooled down I found that a good portion of the connector was gone and some wire insulators were melted. After doing some research online I upgraded the MOSFET for the heat bed and removed the power connector soldering directly to the board, this allowed me to resume printing but I don't think I will ever fully trust this Ramps board. If you decide to purchase this kit DO NOT attach a heated bed unless you have at the very least soldered 16ga. or larger power wires directly to the Ramps board. The build quality is also quite poor, I know for the price I should have relatively low expectations but getting the connectors from the Ramps to mate with the Arduino was a chore since the connector headers were bent in every direction possible. On the plus side it did all work so for the price it could be good for testing or a backup.

Yes, there are quality control problems.

We purchased over a dozen of these kits in this past year. Yes, there are quality control problems. Out of the dozen, several refuse to heat (for extruders or bed). One board was simply missing a MOSFET. The some of the OSOYOO Megas don't talk to windows but others work fine. The last issue that we ran into "voltage regulator failure" or "voltage regulator that produces 6.5V output".

Worked for me!

I had a good experience with this kit. However, I did not follow the instructions on the Osoyoo website (can't remember if those were included or not), since the website instructs you to use a some crummy old version of Merlin. Considering this item was shipped rapidly from Amazon and for a price directly competing with the cheapest sets shipped from China, I'm not going to complain about that. And I really don't think anyone building a RepRap/RAMPS setup should or can rely on manufacturer information, there are simply too many variables to cover.Instead I used the latest Merlin (in this case 1.1.0-RC8) and modified it by uncommenting #define ULTRA_LCD and #define SDSUPPORT in configuration.h. There were some more changes I made to the menus, but those aren't specific to this particular kit, so I won't mention them here. The terminals and connectors looked fairly sturdy. I haven't printed that much yet (maybe four hours total?) But so far the terminals are fine (common weak point), although I must add I'm running a fairly weak heatbed, so I really don't expect to burn out the terminals. The added heat sinks for the drivers was nice, but I still recommend adding a 40mm or bigger fan, that way you can avoid overheating and skipping (I have added such a fan and haven't had any issues so far).

Faulty Arduino Clone

UPDATE: The LCD is faulty as well. Do not buy this product. The Arduino Mega clone is no good. Doesn't work at all. Gets stuck in programming mode and times out when you try and upload firmware to it. Tried on multiple machines with multiple USB cables.

Double check the boards for solder shorts

Works good for the most part, except the RAMPS board melted at the input power terminal. I couldn't tell what the root cause was, but if you see any smoke, stop and recheck the connection. One of the stepper drivers also had a short caused by sloppy soldering. Otherwise everything else works good so far
