Works on many, but not all, difficult-to-see veins
Does it work on everyone? No. But I was able to get IV access on the first try with 3 of my very difficult infusion patients. Does not work on "stained" or very leathery skin (too dense to illuminate), but it works wonderfully on darker skin tones who have healthy skin. Use in conjunction with tourniquet and heat application on those very difficult patients. The downside is the light is so bright, when you turn it off, you see spots for a minute. But while pressing it down on the skin with your nondominant hand, you can get access and flashback with your dominant hand and turn the light off, and slowly and carefully advance. I was about to send it back because it didn't work great on the first 2 patients I tried, but then it worked very well on the next 3. Cost is much less than the infrared type, which I'm sure works better, but those are $2K.

Surprised and impressed
I honestly thought this was "voodoo" but an assistant convinced me to try it and, boy, was she right! It really can help locate/highlight hard-to-see veins, and I have found this a valuable tool to have in the "arsenal", especially for patients who are "hard sticks". Granted, as others have noted, it does not illuminate deep veins (that's not what it's for), but as an affordable compromise between the naked eye and those multi-thousand dollar ultrasound devices, this gets the job done.

Easy to locate veins for venipuncture or IV access
I found it extremely helpful as a nurse, as it helped me decide the best veins. It is light and small enough I clip the nice camo green cover to my scrub pants. It looks and feels a good make, You have to ensure the room is darkened for best results , but it also has a bright white light for examining beside the vein viewing orange light. The only thing I did not like was the clear plastic coverings for hygiene which really hindered the viewfinder when used, was the only reason why i rated 4. I opted not to use the plastic coverings, and just cleanse according to protocols. I was fast and spot on most of the time, and successful in one-time sticks after obtaining this. Increased my level of confidence, with patients avoiding multiple sticks. Directions are spot-on and accurate from the get-go. From then on I knew how to maneuver it better with practice. Highly recommend

Get it!
I bought this as back up for when im traveling so I won’t have to ask for help to get an iv. I don’t need much help to begin with but I bought it just to have. It has come In handy a few times. If you are experienced with ivs like myself you don’t need it. Don’t waste the money. But if you are not confident in your sticks go for it! Def worth it then! Works as described. Def one of the better vein lights I have used.

Game Changer for Hard Sticks
This isn’t necessary for the average Pt, but for the hard sticks its become my go to device with great success. This device has allowed me to get a good line, when the alternatives were an EJ or IO. Being able to locate an ideal vein, then trap it and apply traction while I advance, especially with the rollers makes a notable difference. You do have to dim the lights down though to get the best results, so I wouldn’t suggest trying to use this outside in the sunlight. Get’em loaded in the back of the truck, dim the lights and it’s good to go.
