A Vivid Portrayal of a Most Interesting Time in an Adventurous Woman's Life
I was given this book as part of a promotion and enjoyed delving in, knowing it was a true account of a period in the author's life. As I read, I felt as if I had sat down in the living room of a most gracious, observant lady who proceeded to tell me the story of a most interesting period in her life. From her colorful descriptions, she painted a picture of what the developing Middle East was like at that time, the mysterious world of veiled women as seen through her more "free," unveiled point of view...the quirky lifestyle of expats in their compound, her travels with an interesting and dear collection of friends, and the unraveling of events both political and personal going on around her. The photos of the author from this time were a huge bonus! One gets the impression that the author really had a lot more juicy detail to give on events going on in the background of her personal life, and she might have held back on expressing that uncomfortable feeling for a Western woman of weaving in and out of an exotic, often constricting culture....all understandable...but I trust that one day this excellent writer and communicator will "unveil" her delightful literary voice much more with a work of fiction that will once again paint this picture in more intimate detail, expand upon the characters, and harken back to her wonderful adventures in distant lands.
