Hello, in answer to your question "Does it have to be a gift" no, but best if it is. I did purchase this as a gift for a friend and should probably get one for myself :) As for placement that you will need to research because everyone's Feng Shui directions are different. However, you can google this easy to find the direction that suits you. Typically East is the health and family Bagua area, so if this were a real tree then it would do double work for you as wood is great in the East area, but this is bronze. So, google best placements for many things in your home, I have done this quite often. Probably best placement would be around your or on your desk facing the front door.
