Puppy's First Steps: A Proven Approach to Raising a Happy, Healthy, Well-Behaved Companion

A little dated.
Compared to more modern information, this book is a little dated. There is much newer research on several areas like whether to spay or neuter and positive reinforcement training. The vets who wrote this book are apparently complacent about how they have all the answers but the book needs updating. There are much better places to get the information like all the Puppy Culture videos and materials.

Great book for new puppy owners
I originally picked this book up at the library when we got a new puppy, but found it so interesting and helpful that I bought a copy for myself. It's full of fascinating facts and great guidance for raising a puppy/dog. Also, with the credentials of Tufts University Veterinary dept. behind the writers, feel good that it's solid advice and information.

Excellent book with latest info
This book is loaded with info gained from very detailed research at the vet school which employs the author. It discusses training trends that have gone in and out of fashion, the latest on different feeding trends, puppy development, etc., and what their research has shown. There are some things I wish they'd discuss in more detail, such as how to handle a truly aggressively mouthing puppy that hasn't yet progressed to actually biting, but doesn't respond well to their basic tips. But in general it has been my go-to book of the 5 that I ordered when we were getting ready for our standard Amer. Eskimo puppy who was 9 wks. old when we got him. It was reassuring about many points that we felt were really not workable for us that have been traditional training techniques, particularly how to handle a very anxious young puppy his first week in a totally new environment.

great book for new puppy owners, even if you have raised a puppy before
I have had 5 puppies over the course of my life but this is still a great reference book with lots of helpful information based upon the latest science. Very easy to read and very useful, practical information. I highly recommend for all who are getting a puppy, even if you have had one before.

Great information! Buy this and read it BEFORE considering a dog/puppy any further.
I like it because it's concise, to the point, and a good overview for someone who doesn't know much about dogs and/or has never taken care of one. It informs on everything from choosing a type of dog to fit your lifestyle, to suggestions on how to train your dog socially from the first *weeks* of it's life. This is great both for raising a newborn puppy, and for taking into consideration an adopted dog's prior conditions.
