The lead won't stay in position. Any ideas about what I am doing wrong?

I think the tool was a good idea but, the mechanism doesn't work. Since it's pitched in an angle as you use it, the lead will mark lower and lower as you scribe plus just applying too much pressure pushing the lead down too. Pulling out the lead is also troublesome.
