XFD14Z 18V LXT® Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless 1/2" Driver-Drill, Tool Only

This drill is a beast. I previously had the Makita with a plastic covered chuck, which also had the hammer and screw optional settings. I had originally purchased the combo pack that has the 1/4” driver as well and since I have a separate hammer drill I never used those other setting, only used for drilling. This unit has tension adjust, but only drill setting: however, you can still use it as a screw gun as it is variable speed and tension settings. So really the only difference I see is that it doesn’t have the hammer option. This unit is very powerful and the metal chuck is solid and tightens up nicely, 100x’s better than the ones with a plastic wrapped chuck. Be aware, if you grab the chuck too tight with your thumb and index finger, it will take some skin because you can’t hold it from spinning! I was use to the other type that didn’t have metal nurling for grip and I had to add additional turns to make sure it was tight, but not this one! You’ll definitely want to use the side handle attachment if you think the drill will grab and twist cuz this thing is torque’y!

This sees daily use in my wood shop. Got it to replace my old makita combo drill whose hammer function got stuck on, typical great makita quality, feel, torque, and control. I’m comfortable with the premium price for tools that last as long as all my makita have; old drill (8 years?) still works fine and I’ll probably fix it later. Only owned this one for a few months so far but looks like I’ll be using it for a long time.

This thing is great. Nice and compact with plenty of power.. The multiple settings are much needed with a device with this much torque. I have only used it to remove and reinstall the blade on a push mower, and I used the lowest setting for that. Getting the sockets on can be quite tight, but I suppose that is a good thing.

I haven't had much luck with Makita's torque drills. I need something with power. I use this drill to it's capacity. I think the previous model 07z was defective. So far the 14z is holding up well, but it seems like the clutch slips a little bit after changing gears and going full throttle. I have to slowly ease on the trigger after switching gears. Sometimes I've noticed the chuck will stop spinning for a moment. I'm not sure what's going on here. If this drill doesn't last me at least 2 years, then I am completely done with Makita drills. All their other tools that I own are great. It just sucks because I do not like Milwaukee or Dewalt. Makita has the best ergonomics, hands down...no pun intended. No other power tool brands feel as good in my hand and keep operator fatigue to a minimum. The 14z is also quite compact. I'm able to squeeze this thing in where most other drills cannot go and it's not unnecessarily heavy. 8/6/24 - Drill bit the dust today.

Love my drill. Works great and is tough as nails.

Great drill

It has a metal chuck, smooth acceleration, and enough torque to do anything you can do with a 1/2" bit. Don't buy cheaper Makita cordless drills. I am speaking from experience. On a side note, I don't buy cordless hammer drills. If you need to hammer a hole in concrete, just get a corded hammer drill.
