Lost to the jungle for centuries, Machu Picchu was rediscovered by Hiram Bingham 100 years ago. Itโs now probably the most famous sight in South America โ and justifiably so. Perched high above the river on a knife-edge ridge, the ruins are truly spectacular. The best way to reach them is on foot, following parts of the original paved Inca Trail over passes of 13,500ft. Now in its fifth edition, this best-selling book is an all-in-one guide for a hiking holiday in the Inca region of Peru. Includes how to book from North America, planning and preparation, getting to Peru, detailed Lima and Cusco city guides (where to stay, where to eat, what to see and how to get around); a history of the Incas by explorer and historian Hugh Thomson; health, safety and responsible tourism; comprehensive hiking information for a full range of routes with 40 highly detailed trekking maps in the classic Trailblazer style showing walking times, gradients and points of interest. There are guides to 15 Inca ruins including Machu Picchu itself. Includes 70 maps โ 15 town plans, 15 maps of Inca ruins, 40 hiking maps. Review: Must have for for the MP hiker - Completed this trail last year. This book is a must have and definitely provides more than enough detail for various hikes so that you can complete them independently. Review: Very well written and packed with great tips to plan a successful trip. - Very good guide with excellent trail descriptions, tips on what to expect during your stay and how to get organized to make the most out of it. The book is not just a guide as the author provides a very good historical and socio-cultural background to help the first time visitor understand and enjoy fully Peru. The chapters are packed with details from the many visits of the author to Peru and Bolivia. They provide great tips for different hiking levels, budgets and interests.

Go To Gude for Machu Picchu wspecially if treking
This seems to be the "go to" book for going to Peru and especially to Machu Picchu. Basically every question that I have had, that was not directly related to the specific group with whom I will be traveling, was contained here and the answer was easy to find.

Lot of good hints on using inexpensive transportation
What a strange guide book! Lot of good hints on using inexpensive transportation , but then gives hotel recommendations for very expensive hotels. Have not met many hikers in Peru willing to pay several hundred dollars per night for a hotel room. If you can pay for the high priced hotels, you could also pay to have porters carry your carcass around Peru.

This little book? Invaluable!
Although this book was invaluable on my trip to the Inca Trail, Cusco & Machu Picchu, I was not able to experience all the treks and trails included in this little volume ...but I want to! If you plan to go, this is one of the absolutely invaluable publications you should have!

Book was as described
This guidebook on Machu Picchu was as described - used in very good condition. There were a few dog-eared pages, which was fine. The previous owner left their actual ticket to Machu Picchu from 2013 in the book, which we thought was cool.

Very helpful guide.
I'm going to Peru to trek the Inca Trail in May and this book looks amazing. I've only read the intro and skimmed the rest, but it's packed full of maps and information. I can't wait to read the rest! It's also not huge so I can take it away with me and not worry about the weight of it.
