Not $125 sold on this one...
Ordered this as part of the Amazon Fashion program. The program gets five stars from me, and this is a prime (no pun intended) example why. I already own a couple Fred Perry Pique Polo Shirts, and as much as I really like the styling of this shirt, a few things give me pause:A.) This pique feels nothing like the pique of my other Fred Perry shirts. Where my polos are soft, supple and have kind of a "heavy" drape to them (as you might expect of a quality relaxed fabric), this shirt feels stiff, scratchy, boxy, starchy, and "light." Doesn't even feel like the same company makes it.B.) This item, while what I would expect from the size I ordered, is significantly smaller than my other Fred Perrys (which both seemed to me to be larger than their indicated XL when first purchased). Obviously, this shirt hasn't seen the wash yet. Either way, Fred Perry shirts, in my experience, run large. This one definitely does not.C.) This shirt is made in China. Of course, many Fred Perry shirts are made in China these days, including the two I already own. I don't have a problem with that fact alone, even though the non-made in China Fred Perrys are generally seen as more desirable than the made in China ones. So, why do I bring it up? Please see Point D...D.) The price. Why is this shirt priced so high? In my experience, FP polos go for around $85. Of course, there are your special editions, and this is without a doubt a unique style. Still, priced at $125, made in China, of seemingly inferior quality, for quite a bit more money? That's a tough pill to swallow. So, am I keeping it? That's the big question. I really REALLY like the look, and it fits perfectly. I'm gonna think it over a bit.And in the meantime, I've checked out the Fred Perry website. There, they still have your classic polos availble for $85. And then they have quite a few new items, including a variation on this shirt, for $125. So, I suppose that's definitely the retail price. I still find it pricey, especially when considering the polos from the very cool Fred Perry x Raf Simons collaboration (also currently on the site) can be had starting at $130.If I decide to keep this one, it will likely be my last from Mr. Perry. As much as I appreciate the iconic design, and the way they've refreshed that iconic design over the years, a polo shirt for $125 is a little dear. That dearness comes into sharp focus when you realize there are polo shirts from Comme des Garcons, Gucci, Paul Smith, Kenzo, Burberry, and Polo Ralph Lauren, not to mention the equally iconic Lacoste, and edgier upstarts like Uniqlo, and a classic in its own right Penguin, all of them readily available out there for less. Google can be your best friend.
