A REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK * NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The refreshingly original and “startlingly hopeful” (Lisa Taddeo) debut memoir of an overachieving young lawyer who reluctantly agrees to group psychotherapy and gets psychologically and emotionally naked in a room of six complete strangers—and finds human connection, and herself. Christie Tate had just been named the top student in her law school class and finally had her eating disorder under control. Why then was she driving through Chicago fantasizing about her own death? Why was she envisioning putting an end to the isolation and sadness that still plagued her despite her achievements? Enter Dr. Rosen, a therapist who calmly assures her that if she joins one of his psychotherapy groups, he can transform her life. All she has to do is show up and be honest. About everything—her eating habits, childhood, sexual history, etc. Christie is skeptical, insisting that she is defective, beyond cure. But Dr. Rosen issues a nine-word prescription that will change everything: “You don’t need a cure. You need a witness.” So begins her entry into the strange, terrifying, and ultimately life-changing world of group therapy. Christie is initially put off by Dr. Rosen’s outlandish directives, but as her defenses break down and she comes to trust Dr. Rosen and to depend on the sessions and the prescribed nightly phone calls with various group members, she begins to understand what it means to connect. “Often hilarious, and ultimately very touching” ( People ), Group is “a wild ride” ( The Boston Globe ), and with Christie as our guide, we are given a front row seat to the daring, exhilarating, painful, and hilarious journey that is group therapy—an under-explored process of healing, vulnerability, and human connection, that breaks you down, and then reassembles you so that all the pieces finally fit. Hints of 4 stars, but can’t get past disliking the author
Fascinating insights into one style of group therapy, and the situation that drove this author to depend on it as a literal lifeline. Her talent of making the reader feel the other “characters’l personalities and moods is noteworthy. Wish we knew more about how her family and upbringing affected her illness-it’s referred to often, but, beyond loving through a horrific accident, it’s not really laid out-and should have been. “No secrets in therapy” seems to not apply to her book or to protecting her parents-?-just am insight. I did enjoy the book, but I can’t stand the author. I just don’t like her. She’s judgmental, needy, flippant, whiny. All mental health issues considered, I have disdain for her. It colored how I felt about her at the end, so I didn’t feel like fist-pumping for her when things turned out how they did, but I was definitely able to see her talents as a writer and consider and empathize with her human experience.

Absorbing book
Not sure what I expected when I chose this book. It was well written and explored the ins and outs of a very troubled woman. It kept me absorbed until the end.

Interesting memoir
I found this book to be enlightening. As someone who has tried (and failed, many many times) to go to therapy, it gives me a little better understanding of how I should be approaching appointments. It also helped me see that maybe the issues I struggle with, which at times have me immensely stressed out and feeling alone, are more common than my brain allows me to understand in those moments. I rated this 3.75 stars because there were times I was just, bored. I had to remind myself that this is a work of nonfiction, someone’s actual life, and that life isn’t always super exciting, or even mildly exciting. There was much repetition in the story as well, relationship after relationship of the same actions, same feelings, I just wanted to shake her and say “can’t you see you’re making the same mistakes?” But unfortunately that’s not always how life works. Dr Rosen seemed to understand that and it was intriguing to see his direction for Christie while she navigated her life. Christie goes through years and years of inability to accept love; with an endless need to be loved and to find “the one”. What a combination am I right? Through therapy she’s able to break down many barriers that she created, but it doesn’t happen overnight and it certainly isn’t instantaneous. I appreciate that this memoir was able to shine a light on therapy and healing in a way movies and tv shows don’t—it felt real because it was.

pleasantly surprised!
I actually started reading this book thinking it would inform my practice as a group therapist. I soon discovered that I have a very different approach as Dr. Rosen, haha! But nonetheless I became engrossed in Christie’s story and couldn’t put it down.

Getting Real
What a delightful, insightful, unveiling of an authentic Self. For anyone seeking healing, this is a story of hope. The author’s voice is clear and smart, and amazingly artfully steers clear of indulgence, while inviting the reader to walk with her into vulnerability.

Loved this therapy!
I came across this book as one of #Reesesbookclub pick. To be honest I was quite surprised by the pitch of the story, ‘Group’ as in Group Therapy, and coming to know that it is a memoir of the Author, I felt it is a must read. I was a little skeptical to start the book as I wasn’t sure how the story would unfold because just thinking about a group therapy makes one dizzy. First, I questioned myself, Would I do it? I mean, no way. Telling something deeply personal to someone one-on-one is in itself awkward, let alone a group. The author having a eating disorder(bulimic), thinks she doesn’t really fit, be it with her family, friends and colleagues and even when it comes to relationships. She joins law school for the primary reason to overcome loneliness as she would have to work more hours everyday. She comes to know about Dr. Rosen from her fellow bulimic friend. Since she couldn’t feel her life going anywhere alone, without any further hesitation, she meets Dr.Rosen. After hearing her out, he gives her 5 years of time to achieve where she would really like to go and the only thing she asks of her in return is to let the group in her personal life. It wasn’t really easy sharing every minute detail with the group. And, I could feel her awkwardness every-time she opened up about her hidden memories. Sometimes she sat silent listening to others pouring out, sometimes she vented out her anger and sometimes she broke down but every time she felt getting closer with the group and it’s members. With every new relationship and breakup and sometimes thinking about giving up on the group, she learnt what she exactly wants and what she doesn’t and I think she unfolded her fears beautifully. Finally, when she was able to meet the love of her life I think she was more composed and expressive. What really made me more happy was that she continued to be in the group even after her marriage and kids sharing her happiness and worries with her trusted group because life doesn’t stop once you achieve something as there is struggle in each and every phase of life. There was one particular line which struck a cord. If you can’t say no in relationships, then you can’t be intimate. I feel the freedom to express oneself is very important in a relationship. If you have to just oblige for everything the other person says, then you are not exactly being real and that won’t help you bring intimacy, be it any kind of relationship. I think I have learnt so much from each and every session of Dr. Rosen’s, but I am not sure if I can compose my complete thoughts here. However, I can assure you will enjoy each and every session as it brings out who you really are and what you exactly want with your life and how to overcome those silent fears deep inside.
