Does this phone work with Virginmedia fibre phone plug into a modem?

We also have Virgin Media internet and this phone system just plugs into the modem and works perfectly. Just be aware that if your internet goes down, so does your phone! The only problem we have is that the handsets keep falling off their bases - serious design fault! but otherwise, great little system.

The batteries in the phone with were discarded by mistake. can i use any aaa rechargeable batteries instead?

Use only rechargeable Ni-MH batteries AAA (R03) size', as the 'Quick Guide' puts it.

How long is the cord of the power splluy to the base?

The lead from the adapter to the base unit is just over two meters but you can easily extend it by cutting the cable and inserting a section of bell wire to place the unit where you want it. If you need to do this you will need to ensure that you retain the polarity of the cable eg: live to live etc.
