Can this be installed on an SUV with a back hatch that swings up with tail lights that remain on the frame?

Yes - I just installed it on a 2002 MDX. I had to route the camera wire through the back hatch (license plate screw hole) after removing the back hatch panel. Then I routed the wire to the side of the car along the back of the hatch, to the hinge, then down the weather seal to the light. Worked great.

Does the camera have to be mounted in the center of the plate because my trunk release is right in the way of the camera

I wouldn’t know I only put it in the middle of my plate. But if I would guess it could be centered anywhere in the back if possible. You can adjust up & down. If mounted near the middle would be alright. Note that screen is very hard to see in daylight.

Is this recording camera?

I don't think so. It has no place to put in a storage card into. It works great as a backup camera. If you contact customer service by email, then you can ask them what model has recording capability. They are very helpful.

Can the camera be mounted upside down? in other words hung from a rear spoiler?

Yes the camera is not directional, it views what it sees.
