Would it work for a real pimp?

If real pimps wear crushed velvet then yes it would be perfect.

my husband is 6'3" and about 240lbs...what size would fit him best?

I think an XL should fit. My husband is 6'2 and 230 and it fit. It's stretchy it just depends how tight he wants it.
