I've been searching high and low for the perfect shoe to take section hiking the Appalachian trail
I've been searching high and low for the perfect shoe to take section hiking the Appalachian trail. This shoe is amazing... and I say that after trying shoes from every vendor making trail runners that "run wide" (33 pair ordered - Thanks Prime!! Did I say that out loud?) and this is the shoe I picked. Most shoes cram your toes into a bullet shaped toe dungeon... not Topo. They leave enough room for your toes to stretch out a little... and that means less blisters. Less blisters translates into speed/distance/enjoyment. If you are a victim of blistering on your toes, this may be the shoe for you. I also wear these with a 3rd party insert and it works really well... I'd say Superfeet black will def fit... the blue would likely fit... green is probably out though. I went for something else due to my arch profile.Of all the shoes I tried, the only thing with a pretty similar toe box was the New Balance 4E trail runners... and even after talking to their rep's... it seems like they were just throwing together wide shoes and calling it a day. A lot of folks complaining about durability, etc.. After talking to Topo's rep's, they steered me into this shoe even though I didn't want anything waterproof since I was worried about the time it would take to dry out something GTX... these aren't GTX and I've hiked for hours in the rain without a problem... my feet were wet, but it was sweat. The dry time was reasonable as well... wasn't as bad as GTX. I'm not sure what fairy dust they are putting on these, but they act right. Grats. Oh... did I mention that these things are crazy light for waterproof shoes? 11's come in at 615 grams... 1.35lbs.I suppose another thing you should consider would be some lightweight gaiters... like dirty girl gaiters... or something cuben fiber. I did pick up a bit of dirt, but that's expected on a low rider like this.Avoid ordering too (too) big... you'll hot spot the ball of your foot. All vendors size trail runners like you're supposed to wear clown shoes. I started with a 10.5... worked up to a 12 and came back to an 11. I'm truly 9.5. The 11 did break in a bit and although I was initially worried about the toe box being slightly tighter, I didn't end up with any hot spots with the 11... and that's with both thin running socks and hiking socks.I suppose the only other thing is that this isn't your everyday running shoe. There's not a lot of spring in the step and the heel isn't like your typical cloud of cush. These shoes aren't zero drop, but they are only 3mm... which means you'll finally walk close to the way nature intended. This is good. You'll begin building some muscles where you used to be cush as well. The rock plate is solid... which is what I really care about... well done. All in all... Topo has a new fan. I'm sold. Happy stepping!------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------UPDATE - 6/6/2017 (~8 months later)I sat here with a calculator and figured out that I've put roughly 800 miles on these shoes. I can honestly say that these are the best shoes I've ever owned. They're incredibly comfy. The wear has shown, and I'd assume accelerated, since most of those miles were on asphalt (Central Park loop). They're no longer waterproof, but you can buy the sprays here. At any rate, I bought another pair (as one should)... and... while I use them inside (to break them in), I'm really having a hard time letting go of these old sneakers... I'm back to 10-15 miles a day since the seasons changed... they just feel... right. Anyway... figured I'd update since I'm so impressed.

Not bad, but not as water resistent as hoped
There are two issues with these shoes, which otherwise are fine. First, if there is medium to heavy rain and the rain hits the top of the shoes (how could it not?) water leaks in from the top of the shoe on the sides of the tongue. It's not a tremendous amount but enough to get your feet moist after not too long. Second, the tread on the bottom of the foot will not stop your foot from sliding forward on a slippery surface. I slipped and fell when coming in from the rain when I stepped on a plastic textured surface (which ironically I think was set up to prevent slippage). Otherwise I have no major issues with the shoes.

Probably a great shoe for the right feet
Despite the relatively wide toe box, this shoe is very low volume in the forefoot. I normally wear either a men's 10 or 10.5 EE running shoe, and for me a men's 11 in this shoe felt like I was stuffing my toes into a much smaller shoe. Design and materials seem like just what I'm looking for in a trail running/hiking shoe, but going up to a size 12 in hopes of more toe room didn't seem worth trying as the issue isn't length, nor width, but rather a lack of "head room" for the toes.
