Absolute Best Gloves for a Woodburning Oven
I have a wonderful woodburning oven, which I love but getting it started means putting wood onto the fire in the oven. Of course I have wrought iron tools, but the truth is that these gloves work so well that unless I am moving logs that are fully on fire, I use gloved hands rather than iron tools to place the logs. They are far more comfortable and protective and heat resistant than silicone. I just ordered a 2nd pair to have on hand -- so to speak!-- even though these well made, sturdy gloves are still in great condition. Buy them, and you too will love them.

Perfect for what they're intended for.
Looking through some of the questions and comments listed for these gloves, I'd like to address a few concerns. First off, I'll address the size. At 6' 3" and 280 lbs, I have experience with items not fitting. These gloves fit me well so I would call them Extra Large. Now I have had XL gloves that didn't fit me, but these fit me well.Second, and probably most important is the insulating property of the gloves. In my opinion, these gloves are not intended for extended periods of exposure to extreme heat. To be more specific, these gloves are a pretty thick leather glove, but not an "insulated" glove. The intention of the gloves is to perform short duties that require heat and ember splash protection, which these gloves do. They nearly come up to my elbow so your forearms are protected from embers that may float when dumping the hot coals. You can also take out the grate while it's hot, but don't think you can stand there and hold something that's 500 degrees for a long period as that's not what these gloves are designed for, in my opinion. Something like the old asbestos loves are really made for extended heat exposure.I like them. I think they are made well and I am very happy that they fit so well!

Almost Great, but...
After wearing out my previous pair of fireplace gloves, I went looking for a well constructed, reasonably priced replacement. This pair of 'Steven Raichlen Best Of' gloves seemed to fit my requirements nicely, so I bought them. They arrived quickly, which was nice, but when I opened the box I was met with a VERY strong, musty odor. At first I thought it might be the box itself, but no...it was definitely the gloves. They looked fine, mind you. No mold or anything else could be found on the leather. They looked like they were quite capable of performing their intended function, but their pungent odor invaded and occupied the entire breezeway and kitchen. Though my wife wasn't happy about that, I went ahead and put them to use, as our old gloves were completely shot.I'm happy to report that the gloves work very well. They're built well enough to allow me to take my time placing logs into the stove and make adjustments without feeling like my hand is going to burst into flames. And though the nasty odor lingers I think we are generally happy with the quality of the gloves otherwise. If you're more concerned with the protection level of the gloves you wear versus the smell they may contain, I would recommend these gloves on that basis. But, if you are particular about that sort of thing in a safety glove, well...you may want to choose otherwise.

Great for Campfire Cooking
I use these in camp all the time. They are thick enough that I can pick up and move my Dutch Oven without any tools. They are also long enough that they come up to my elbow (I have average length arms) so I can grab foil packs out of the fire without losing arm hair. Not much loss of dexterity because it is well-worked suede. As with any cooking glove, do NOT get them wet because then you lose all protection but that's more of a safety-tip than an evaluation. I have used them to move my wood-fired backpack stove while it is going but they are heavy (for backpacking) so I've never brought them on the trail.I am thinking about getting another pair for our Scout Troop so boys can work around the fire.

Heavy duty and comfortable!
These gloves are HUGE. They fit my husband's hands which are very wide and they are even comfortable for me to wear with my smaller hands. The gloves have a strap that helps secure them to your arm so that they feel like just the right size. We feel very protected from the grill when they are used and I no longer hear cursing from singed hands when working on a large and very hot grill surface. We mainly bought these because they made the America's Test Kitchen equipment "best of" list and had to have them. They are worth every penny and feel that they'll hold up for a long time. I only wish that they had a little fabric ring to hang them up when not using them.

Heavy Duty
These were a gift for someone who has a Big Charcoal Egg and they are very well made and long on the arm for getting right in the grill to work. Very Satisfied with this purchase! Steven Raichlen is talented at grilling and should be proud to have his name on these as well.

Perfect bbq gloves
These are the best bbq gloves I have bought. Had these for 2 years and they are still going strong. They are so heat resistant that you can pick up the hot grates. However I wouldn't recommend doing this as the grease gets into the leather reducing the heat resistance.

Quality made gloves. Work great.
These are well made quality gloves. Use them for my Weber charcoal bbq. They work great. Nothing negative to say about them.
