As expected...Great Sound!!
Other than the volume control knob, this HD-CD1 unit is perfect...as I expected from everything I've read and heard about a Marantz product & sound. I can now verify the hype as this is my first Marantz product and I love it. I can now enjoy high quality sound from my old CD's. The 3 levels of headphone amp power is a nice feature. I set mine on HIGH and use my Audio-Technica M50x headphones and enjoy!! That's why I bought this, and it delivers...pure beautiful sound. In the past, my laptop and external headphone DAC/amp produced some minor electrical interference sounds that drove me nuts. Now, that's over thanks to this sweet unit. Odds n ends: 1) The read-out is visually easy to read on the display. 2) This thing is heavy! 3) The electrical cord is very thick and heavy duty (still two prongs though). 4) I have played lots of CD's with NO playback issues...even some of my scratched up CD's played...and still doesn't miss a beat. 5) The owners manual was downloaded onto my computer with a user-friendly PDF file that's easy to navigate your way around the information. 6) I could not find any lower price (it's $200 less than everywhere else I looked) than Music Direct here on Amazon...very good price, fast delivery, and safe packaging from them. And now for the awful volume knob: 1) its teeny-tiny steel stub that is slick and hard to grab, 2) its hard to turn because it's so stiff, 3) it has no indicator mark on the knob, 4) the remote control will not control the volume... thus, your forced to use this knob. I'm going to have to get creative and rig something up on the knob to make it easier to grab and control. If your hooking this up to an amp or receiver, then you wont have to deal with this issue. I'm slowly getting used to it, but I wish Marantz had put more effort into this. Overall, I'm Happy with my purchase. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to put on some Maynard Ferguson and enjoy my new CD player !!!

old school Marantz user (1970s).
Just purchased the unit (Jan 2019). Still testing it. I am using DENON D7200 headphones and the unit sounds very good. Prefer to use headphones because I live in an apartment and do not wish to disturb the neighbors. Sure glad the unit has a headphone amp. It serves it's purpose for me. Testing the CD player with quality cds but not SACDs. Unit is built like a tank, like the old days, but time will tell if it holds up. Aesthetic to look at too !. Not sure if I should order the matching Marantz amp. No intentions to use speakers.

Excellent basic CD player
Have used this CD player for quite a few discs and have no complaint at all with the operation or the sound. Headphone connection is fine - works well with my mid level Grado headphones. The remote is set up for controlling both the CD player and the matching Marantz amp - would be a great benefit to be able to control the volume so probably will end up ordering the amp .

Remote doesn't control the volume
I returned this due to the subject flaw, but frankly didn't hear such great audio from CDs to warrant the exorbitant price. I bought the Sharp 5-CD player instead and have been very happy.Sharp XL-BH250 Sharp 5-Disc Micro Shelf Executive Speaker System with Bluetooth, USB Port for MP3 Playback, AM/FM, Audio in for Digital Players

Amazon does not carry this item anymore, but beware with "copy controlled" CDs
Otherwise I really really love this CD player but it does not play early 2000's CDs with copy control properly. It skips slightly every 5-10 seconds which basically makes it useless for those discs. The very same CDs play perfectly in other players, even in car, so it's not the disc itself.

Great sound but tracking problems
Really wanted to like this piece. The Amp that goes with it is just incredible. When this player works it sounds great, however, it just doesn't like so many discs that I know are not scratched or defective, and just wont track. Thought it would get better after several weeks of break in, but no. Not typical Marantz. Several of their products I own, and Love them ALL. Stuck with this oneUpdate... Seems this piece just took awhile to break in. Sound and esthetics are great. Right up there with my other Marantz pieces. Great player, but unfortunately discontinued

System sounds better than my big audio system
Excellent sound, paired with the Marantz HD-AMP1, and a pair of SVS Ultra bookshelf speakers and subwoofer. I use it for music (CDs) in my living room/dining room. The system replaced an ok-quality previous set. The problem now is that I can hear the lack of recording quality in some of my favorite older CDs. Very happy with it, well worth the investment.

Marantz CD ( HDCD1)
I know this CD player has great reviews , however don't care for the sound as much as my old Sony CD player .
