Q: do you wet it first? It looks as if it would scratch it's so hard.

You do wet it, but wetting it doesn't soften it. It's recycled glass, so it's definitely hard. When you rub it over the surface, the recycled glass rubs off so that after many uses, it begins to disintegrate. I've only used it in the potty, so all I can say is that it doesn't look like it's scratching, but I haven't made a really close inspection. If it is scratching it, it is minor b/c I can't see any scratches, and I've used it repeatedly. Works like a dream!

I had hard water and soap scum that would not come off w/ any other cleaners and this worked beautifully, the only problem is it leaves scratches on surfaces
