Ka-Bar Jarosz Folder Knife - updated
Re-review on re-purchase on April 6, 2020:I bought this knife the first time in March of 2017. It has been with me every day since then. Recently, I snapped off an 8th of an inch off the point (my fault - I was trying to pry apart a VERY corroded car battery cable). I am now ordering another one. The little indentation I mentioned in the original review (below) that kept the closed blade in place & required a touch of extra force to open eased up in a month (with a little help from my own adjustments) and, from that point on, held the blade closed unfailingly, yet let it open quickly, with less pressure on the thumb stud. It is a great knife for everything from opening Amazon packages to use as a tactical self-defense weapon, with a nice thick, yet razor-sharp blade and a nylon/glass handle that is a perfect fit for my hand. At a blade length of 3.5" I could wish for a bit more blade length. I have other, more expensive knives with longer blades, but none I'd want to use to defend myself (or even open an Amazon package ;) ) any more, if as much as this one. It is a Ka-Bar issue of a Jimmy Jarosz knife that cost $20.00 more on KA-BAR's own website. Short of a very expensive Jarosz custom knife at a much higher price, this is the best I've seen. I've never bought a knife any sharper right out of the box. I have a heavy beard growth, but can shave with this with ease. It doesn't need whetstoning often to keep the blade sharp.Over 3 years of flawless performance & I am buying another one rather than simply use one of my other knives in its place. Can't say enough about it.The knife originally came with the clip mounted for blade-point down carrying in the pocket, but the handle has a second cutout to move the clip to the base to carry with the point up (my preference). After a couple of years, one of the two .050 Allen screws holding the clip in place began to loosen & let the clip wiggle, re-tightening only helped for a while, but a touch of super-glue on the screw & the inside of the clip has now held it motionless for the past year without a wiggle. Drawing the knife from front or back pants pocket is easy peasy.I did make one misstatement in my first review as I must have been thinking of one of my other knives. The knife is ambidextrous, with thumb studs on both sides of the blade for right-or-left-hand opening.First review in March 2017:It is a bit bigger and wider than I would prefer and won't always be my primary carry knife. However, it is a total Ka-Bar quality blade. The biggest pro is that you can install the clip at the blade end or the other end, which I prefer for carrying in a back pocket. The biggest con is that it has a little nub in the hinge to make sure the knife stays closed and doesn't open accidentally in your pocket. This nub puts just enough extra pressure on the hinge and blade to make it difficult to open it the first inch using the thumb stud. To overcome the friction of the nub that holds the blade closed in your pocket, you have to put your thumb at the back edge, or even behind the stud and press down on the blade to lessen the friction on that darn safety nub as you press forward. This is a bit awkward position for fully opening the blade with your thumb, though once you get the blade an inch out of the handle, you can easily wrist-snap it fully open like a gravity knife. I suspect this will ease up when I find a way to file down the safety nub a tad. The Walker-style lock is very good, though not as easy to disengage as in some of my other knives. My knife is a right-handers knife only as the pocket clip and thumb stud can not be reversed (I don't know if they make a left-handed version). My favorite knife is an early 1940s German Panther K55 tactical knife, which my uncle brought back from Europe after WW II. It doesn't have an easy open mechanism, but a bit of filing & a bit of Hoppes gun oil has turned it into a great gravity knife. The blade is Solingen steel extending 3 1/2 inches, single-edged and straight, and with a good whetstoning I can shave with it. The knife is VERY light, flat & very narrow (3/8ths of an inch thick and less than an inch wide) - producing no bulge in a pocket. It has an excellent guard and even a lanyard hole. It's a real pity that this knife is not available for sale (hint: Amazon) unless you find a used one. Keep your eyes out at flea markets and gun shows. I actually found a second one that way, though it had a less tactical blade shape and the hinge was not in good shape. They are worth serious money if the seller knows what they are.

A great looking, beast of a knife!
This is a big pocket knife. Rock solid and sharp as a razor. Well built just like my other KA-BAR knives. The other reviews talk about the sharp edges on the scales - they are correct and could be sanded down a bit. Also, the pocket clip was installed on the side with the thumb studs which is something I'm not used to and makes opening a little tricky. Nothing that removing or moving to the other side won't fix.I believe the Jarosz is a great knife for the price and has all the things that I like for in a pocket knife like: large but appropriately sized thumb studs, perfect blade size, solid lock with absolutely no wobble, and, needless to say, a real looker! :-)

Good value for a solid knife. Buy it.
Excellent hunting knife. Heavy blade. Sharpens easily, keeps edge well. Field dressed and skinned my deer with gusto. The shape of the handle and blade are very comfortable and the belt clip feels secure.Edit: one year later this knife continues to defy its value price. The action feel and quality are very good. While this knife has settled into the role of “rugged dependable “ not EDC. a bit heavy and large for me. I wear scrubs at work and use a different knife for that. But when I’m headed outdoors, Hunting, camping, working around the house. Called on it the other day to do some light prying and scraping on an old painted shut window without a flinch. The aus 8a blade keeps a real world sharp ( I can shave with it and I keep it that way) far longer than its pedigree would lead you to believe. It also sharpens up like a dream and is very forgivingI’ve really come to enjoy the feel of this knife and it’s excellent one hand action which is a joy to operate and locks up like a tank. It rideswell from its pocket clip without poking and jabbingFrankly it just the weight that keeps it in the drawer. If your looking for a good general purpose knife that can handle a little abuse. This is your ticketThat’s a pretty tall order for a 40$ knife but there you have it.

Best knife in this price range
I own a lot of 30-70 dollar folding knives and this one tops all of them. I've owned Kershaw, CRKT, Buck, etc. (never Ka-Bar) None of them come close to as solidly built. This thing is a beast.Pros-Ergonomic, full feeling grips.-Extremely beefy liner-Swings open smoothly but also stays "locked" in when closed (doesn't open in pocket)-Reversible clip-Simple, useful, good-looking blade geometry (and nice finish)-Wide tang-Comes very sharpCons-No jimping on the liner lock. So it can be a little tough to unlock the knife for closing. However, I've recently noticed that the grip cuts out a little bit on the right side so you just have to push the liner from the side instead of the face of it.-You need a special key for the pivot screw (I don't know where you would get this)Other notable details that may not be noticeable from the picture are - a peg that is hidden inside the grip for a paracord lanyard, jimping on the tang, and nice stone-wash blade finish. Also if you like the blade design, look up "Jarosz Knives" if you want to see some wild looking custom knives by the same designer. This has replaced all of my other folding knives. It's very clear that someone has paid a lot of attention to every detail when designing this. I trust its durability over all of the others by far. Will be getting another.
