Probably as close to a fixed blade as a folding knife can come. Once it's open and locked up, this knife is impressively strong. The handle is made of one solid piece of folded steel, and the locking mechanism would need to be ridiculously abused in order to induce failure. Honestly, if you defeat the lock, you're doing things with this knife that nobody should be doing with any kind of knife, in just about any situation. Everyone seems to use batoning as some kind of knife-proving stress test: I'm not honestly sure why, since I've batoned wood for fires using all kinds of knives, folding and otherwise, in all kinds of environments in my travels. It strikes me that, if you're careful, you could baton wood with a dime-store nail file, but I digress. That said, I've batoned plenty of wood with this knife, with absolutely no discernible negative impact on either the blade edge or the lock-up, and without inducing any kind of blade play to the knife whatsoever. It is a well-made, impressively tough knife. For a folder, it's a beast. That is, big. However, it's slender and actually fits in the pocket as comfortably as my trusty and beloved Kershaw Leek.A couple of caveats: The locking mechanism is unique, using a necessarily powerful spring-actuated bolt that engages at the end of the handle. How many times have I pinched one of my fingers between the bolt and the handle while opening or closing the blade? Probably every other time. Then again, I'm not terribly bright. Just be aware. Also, the cord that comes with the knife is not actual paracord. I recommend cutting it off and replacing it with true 550 paracord out of the box, mainly because the fake stuff will fray and break pretty quickly after not too many cycles of pulling to close the knife. And - by the way - the cord is a required feature of the design of this knife: You pull the cord to disengage the bolt when closing the blade. You would be hating life if you had to attempt this without the cord. Take my word for it: Replace the cord with the real stuff. Finally, it has a thumb stud, but this is not realistically a one-handed opener. I suppose, if your will is strong enough, you could do it without opening a gash in your thumb. But, realistically, this is not a knife you're going to flick open with the thumb of one hand while clinging to a cliff-edge with the other. Do you care? I don't. When have I ever had to rely on opening a knife with one hand anyway? That would be never. This is a matter of convenience as far as I'm concerned, not survival. Heck, I can grip the spine of a blade with my teeth if I really need to. Don't let that stop you from purchasing this wonderful knife.Finally, I can't honestly speak to issues of corrosion and finish/wear, as I've acquired and used the knife well beyond my sleeping in the snow and hoping the knife works while feathering sticks and striking fires during raging blizzards days. But, based on all other evidence and observations, I'm confident that commonsense knife care practices and discipline will guarantee years of useful service.It's a really, really good knife. Buy two. They're cheap.

For what it is, it's a great knife! Simple, durable, built for working hard. I'd recommend it for hunting, camping, backpacking, farm/ranch work and tradesman work.It's NOT comparable to any "typical" EDC knife (which is fairly obvious).Pros:Good value per dollar. Cheap enough to replace if lost or broken.Strong materials and lock design. It'll take a beating and keep ya safe too!Simple parts and design. Gotta love K.I.S.S.Blade edge is sharp and well ground out of the box. Its a knife... The picture doesn't come near to doing it justice. This knife is a heavy duty well built tool. The blade is thick steel and the edge is flat ground, smooth but unpolished, without blood grooves, shiny plating, or serrations. It's designed and built for perfect utility that has a beauty all it's own, like an old knobby British motorcycle. I'll take the word of other reviewers how hard and tough the steel is. It sure looks tough.Opening the knife is easy, just swing the blade out. Closing it is another potential "OH S%^T!!!!" entirely. The knife is razor sharp, as others have stated. I found the spring to be uncomfortably strong and unsteady to pull the first few times. It was a bit intimidating to be straining so near a blade sharp enough and heavy enough to cut bone, but the instructions work. Once the closing starts a bit, you just release the cord and close it like any other folding knife. Just practicing this eventing it's becoming easier. I cut our tomatoes and chopped celery with it tonight. It worked almost as good as my best santoku knife which is specifically designed for chopping food.Another reviewer mentioned the 30 degree bevel to the edge, as opposed to the 20 degree or so bevel of cooking knives. This knife is so sharp, I'll not mess with excellence. When it needs sharpening, I'll keep the 30 degree edge. I sharpen my pocket knives to 30 degrees, and they work just fine.In the hand, the knife is comfortable and well balanced, a pleasure to use. I expect to get years of great service out of it. At the Amazon price, this knife is a bargain.

I bought one of these 10yrs ago, just happened to be the year CS released it in CTS BD1 steel. Please see pics to verify. I carried this thing for half that time and loved it. Opening and closing the knife takes practice and with time it's not a big deal anymore. The lock mechanism is amazing. This knife will not open or close unless it is purposefully done so. The knife is bigger than it looks and it's built for use as a tool, not a display knife. I had to buy another and that should tell you how feel about this knife. Lastly, for being a big folder it rides well in the pocket.

Just ordered this knife the other day. Got the free trial of Amazon Prime and the knife was shipped to my house the next day. I am no expert on knives or survival or bushcraft or any of that, but I am a fan of quality products. I did my research on this knife and despite some bad reviews I decided to buy one. It is quite a large folding knife. It came razor sharp out of the box which is a plus. No instructions expect for a few warning labels. I like the look and concept of the knife's simplicity. It feels solid in my hand, not a small knife by any means. I used it earlier to cut into trees and it does a good job at carving and slicing. I just now used it to baton some firewood in my backyard. I know you aren't really supposed to, but I figured Cold Steel would probably send me one if I said mine broke with normal use. Anyways, i would advise against batoning with this knife. After a few logs, some with knots in them, I noticed it was a little looser, not much. I stopped batoning and tightened it with a torx screwdriver. I even made it a little tighter just for good measure. By no means does this replace a fixed blade knife in a survival or any situation, however I do believe this knife is very tough, sturdy, made with quality materials, and is very affordable. If you are looking for a folder for camping, hiking, hunting, or fishing etc I would highly recommend this knife for its purposes. If you plan on chopping or splitting wood by baton, I would get a fixed blade with a full tang. This knife is simply a very, very tough folder, and should be regarded as such.

This is one big, tough, sharp knife; and it fits in your pocket. It is everything I have been looking for in a folding hunting/camping knife. However treat it with respect and read the instructions carefully. It has some tricky features and it is sharp! Within 15 minutes of getting it out of the box I had three small cuts on my hands. The worst one was a pinch between the back of the blade and the top of the handle. It is difficult but possible to open the blade with one hand using the stud: Honest. I do it most of the time now although it is very easy to open by grabbing the blade with the off hand. I appreciate the fact that the whole thing is made of stainless steel. I always carry a folding hunter with me in the bush but I also carry fixed blade knives with me in my game bag when hunting because I find it difficult to clean a folding hunter after field butchering game. This thing goes in the sink to soak and then I stand it up on its front with the blade open to dry. I put a longer lanyard on it so I could slip it over my wrist. This is especially handy when using the knife for chopping small branches or using it where dropping it is inconvenient. (Tree stand, mountain, deep lake.)This is great product. The reason I did not down grade the knife based on my cautions stated above is that I believe we should all be responsible for the safe use of our own tools. Read the instructions, keep your fingers out of the way and practice. If you want something safe buy a butter knife!

I heartily stand behind Cold steel and all of their products, especially in the lower price ranges. I've purchased knives in this range before, but never have I ended up with such a durable product! The Pocket Bushman definitely stacks up to the legendary quality of it's big brother, the Bushman.At 10.25" overall, this is by no means a small knife. To some it may be too large for everyday carry, but it suits me, as I generally carry a similarly sized fixed blade. The RamSafe Lock is extremely tight and allows for no play in the blade at all. Making the blade handle like a fixed blade. The one piece folded steel handle fits my large hands well, allowing for a good grip in a number of different grips. It isn't a fast opening knife like some tactical folders or liner locks. In my experience, speed sacrifices strength and rigidity at this price point.For less than $75, you can barely find a stronger or better quality knife. For less than $50, forget it. This is the best there is. Buy one, you won't regret it.

This is a remarkable well constructed folding knife. BE SURE TO READ THE OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS as the blade locking mechanism will initially feel very stiff and awkward to operate until you get used to the method used to close the knife safely. Make no mistake, this is a big medium weight folder and comes fully sharpened, in fact I was amazed at how easily the blade cuts through pretty much anything I tried. Just be advised that the locking mechanism is VERY stout and requires strong hands and understanding to operate safely. Anyone who manages to break/damage this knife should have been using a crowbar or a chisel instead-and a STRONG one at that;). My only negative is that some kind of a high friction pattern on the knife's sides would've been helpful for getting a more secure grip on the knife during operation of it's locking/unlocking mechanism.

カーペンター社のCTS-BD1という鋼材がどんなのか気になって購入。ブレードは研ぎ心地がとても良い。粒子が細かい感じがして、ステンレス鋼材の中では和鋼に近い印象。すぐに良い刃が付き、切れ味も素晴らしい。まだそれほど使い込んでいないが、刃持ちはそこそこ程度と予想。実用的に問題が出るほどヤワではないとは思う。このナイフそのものの使い勝手は、なんというか独特すぎる。片手でパッと開いて作業してサッとしまう、などというのは無理。よく調べて自分に合うか検討してからの購入をおすすめしたい。追記:藪を切り払う際に使ってみた。相当雑に振り回して切りまくったが、全くトラブルなし。楽に研げるのにこれだけ永切れするのは素晴らしい。馬鹿みたいに使いにくいロック機構も、こういった雑で長時間刃を出したままな使い方の場合は、誤ってロック解除される危険が少ないので向いている。ただ、ナタよりはバランスが手元寄りなので疲れる。ナタの代用というより、バックアップ用と考えた方が良いように思う。

Simpel aber superrobust, mit den Abmeßungen eines ordentlichen Fahrtenmessers und einem Verriegelungsmechanismus der Maßstäbe setzt. Sicher ist die Handhabung des "Ram-Safe-Locks" etwas ungewohnt, aber durchaus praktikabel und in den meisten Situationen leicht durchführbar. Im Netz befinden sich eindrucksvolle Videos, die den härtesten Einsatz dieses Artikels dokumentieren und selbst die negativen Beiträge überzeugen (bei intelligenter Bertrachtung) den Zuschauer von der überragenden Praxistauglichkeit dieses Produktes (ein Messer ist nunmal keine Axt!). Der aus einem Stück, rostträgem Stahl gefaltete Griff, liegt gut in der Hand. Bei gröberen Arbeiten sollte man jedoch Handschuhe tragen, oder den Griff umwickeln. Geschlossen, lässt sich das "Bushman Pocket" Aufgrund seiner schlanken Machart, leicht und bequem tragen. Um dem deutschen Waffengesetz zu genügen, habe ich zu diesem Zweck, den (für mich) ohnehin überflüssigen Daumenpin entfernt. Die einzigartige Klingenarretierung rastet mit einem satten "SmACK" ein und verriegelt in einer derart stabilen und unverrückbaren Art und Weise, wie es bisher bei einem Klappmesser nicht für möglich gehalten wurde. Das mag unter anderem auch daran liegen, das nicht wie bei den meisten Messern dieser Preisklasse, die Gleitscheiben aus Plastik oder Teflon gefertigt wurden, sondern diese aus Bronze bestehen. Die Klinge in der unempfindlichen "Stonewashed" Optik, ist aus einem schnitthaltigen und belastbaren Kruppstahl gefertigt und durch Ihre Form, für fast alle Aufgaben geeignet. Der zunächst etwas kurz erscheinende Clip, ist äußerst stramm und in seiner Länge völlig ausreichend und durchdacht.Fazit: Ein wirklich robustes Alltagsmesser, für Menschen, die schon länger einen großen und stabilen Begleiter für Outdoor und Arbeit gesucht haben.Ergo: KAUFTIPP!

Durch den Daumenpinn lässt es sich relativ schwer öffnent, was an der starken Feder liegt, die den Verriegelungskeil der Klinge in Position hält und verhindert, das es sich aus versehen entriegelt.Die entriegelung der Klinge erfolgt durch das Ziehen an der angebrachten Schnur, mit der man den Keil nach hinten wegzieht. Nun kann man die Klinge einklappen. Das ist zu beginn etwas umständlich.Das sollte jedem Klar sein, der sich dieses Messer kauft.By the way... Es kam wirklich scharf aus der Verpackung. So eine Schärfe habe ich bei noch keinem Messer im Neuzustand gesehen. Aber das mag nichts heißen.Durch diesen Keil, der sich vor die Klinge schiebt ist es auch wirklich Bombenstabil.Es hält die Schärfe nicht soo lange, dafür kann man es einfach nachschleifen und hat damit immer schnell ein tolles Messer zur Hand.Es schaut sehr edel aus und mutet an wie ein Marinemesser. Eine Mischung aus Tradition und fast schon klinischen Materialien und Rafinessen, die eben mal nicht so schnell rosten. Zudem ist die Klinge auch sehr groß. Der Griff ist einfach gehalten, schaut etwas flach aus, ist dabei aber gut konturiert und liegt sehr gut in der Hand.Außerdem kommt auf sämtlichen Bildern nicht rüber, wie schön das Messer tatsächlich ist! Das muss man in der Hand halten.Als Arbeitsmesser mehr als nur zu gebrauchen.Fazit:Wer einen riesen Oschi von Taschenmesser sucht, der sauscharf aus der Box kommt, toll verarbeitet und eine gute Handlage besitzt, der sollte hier zuschlagen. der Preis ist fair (ich hatte ca. 41 Euro gezahlt)
