Product Description East Wind West Wind follows the extraordinary life of a missionary child, born in rural West Virginia at the end of the nineteenth century and raised in rural China, who became one of the most popular American writers of the 20th century. Best known for her novel, The Good Earth, Pearl Buck wrote over 100 books during her career. She was also an outspoken advocate for numerous causes including women's rights, civil rights, the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act, mixed race adoption and tolerance for the mentally challenged. In December, 1938, a radio broadcast from Stockholm, Sweden, sped some surprising news around the world. That year the Nobel Prize for literature was awarded to author, Pearl Sydenstricker Buck. With this announcement, the 46-year old writer stepped into an international spotlight, where she was able to use her celebrity as a writer to draw attention to many social issues of her time. Pearl Buck still holds the distinction of being the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for literature. A Documentary of a Woman Ahead of Her Time
Pearl S. Buck won both the Nobel Prize in Literature for her body of writing and the Pulitzer Prize for The Good Earth. I enjoyed the recollections of Pearl S. Buck's sister, neighbors in China, and children and learning how Ms. Buck was discriminated against by American writing peers, after she gained international renown. A very thorough biography of this pioneer, in both American literature and civil rights in the United States and Asia. Surprisingly progressive about human rights, religion, and politics, considering that Pearl S. Buck was the child of missionaries. She stayed engaged in the issues of her time and intellectually curious throughout her life. Documentary is 85 minutes long. Produced in 1993.

Getting To Know The Real Pearl Buck
I have always considered Pearl Buck a very interesting personality, but somewhat mysterious. This excellent portrayal of her life lifted the veil and allowed me to see this remarkable lady up close and personal. I highly recommend the film. It's accurate history and very entertaining.
