Rose, Where Did You Get That Red?: Teaching Great Poetry to Children

Don't Be Scared of Poetry
I know a lot of teachers who would be open to teaching poetry in the classroom, if they themselves weren't frightened of it. This book offers a variety of poetry -- from all forms and time periods -- and accompanies each one with both an explanation of the poem itself and suggested applications in the classroom. I first encountered the book in a course on teaching English, and every class, we started with a poem in this book and wrote our own poem of imitation. It felt like going to a spa retreat every time I got to class, because through poetry, we were able to creatively express our feelings, and the exercises also helped create an atmosphere of trust in the room, where we were open with our work and unafraid of criticism. The book also contains a lot of student-generated responses to show that even the most complex poetry contains themes that can be translated to any grade level.

I used this as a text in my first years of teaching poetry in 1977. I bought this copy for a college student/graduate of mine who is now teaching poetry at a boarding school. That's 38 years after I started my career, and the book is as relevant today as it was then!

An important text
My go to poetry curriculum; perfect for introducing rich poetry to students. And then, also introducing reposnses as writing prompts that are both beautiful and fun.

Bought this book to aid my attempts to teach a poetry class for our local homeschooling coop. While I am not an expert in poetry, I found most of the peoms in this book aren't appropriate for a young crowd that is being taught Christian theology. If you aren't a Christian, then this book probably won't be a problem, it just isn't going to work for me.

Wonderful intro to poetry for younger ages and up
Great companion to Wishes, Lies and Dreams. Geared for older kids, pre-teen and up. Kenneth Koch is fabulous. If you're hoping to interest your child in poetry, Koch's the man to do it.

Gorgeous title - wonderful work
Not new (it was published in 1998) but new to me – by far the most wonderful book I have read on teaching poetry to children. It has a lot to say to any of us who fancy our hand at rhythm and rhyme, and it’s full of the most wonderful verse created by children who worked with the author. And what a gorgeous title!
