A Great Insightful book on the development of Western Civilization enabled by the absorption of Eastern/Middle Eastern ideas and technologies!This book provided concrete evidences of earlier Eastern/Middle Eastern ideas and technologies that enabled the development of the West and the modern world. Without these earlier ideas and inventions of the Eastern/Middle Eastern peoples, the West and indeed the world would certainly not have evolved into the modern world as we now all live in.Highly recommended for insightful reading and understanding of world history!

.... "following" the footsteps of his grandfather, J M Hobson, paints a superb trajectory of eastern influence, most scholars omit or neglect, upon the western story of intercultural growth. Atoms, interact, so does cultures. Some would say, Hobson is stretching his point, is he. If one's mind is not open, read not; but if one is, read, and enjoy the ride.

I first met this book as a casual choice in my local library, read it and then kept referring to its thesis and some specific points for years. Eventually I decided I really ought to have it, so found it on Amazon.Reading it more carefully now, I am even more impressed. The main idea I have this time is just how orientalist I am, as are most of the histories I read. An interesting concept he has is that Europe was a late developer; not until about 1800 did it begin to catch up with the East, and so could take advantage of the work of others. Besides the many technical innovations Europe acquired from the East, mainly China, there were organisational developments as well. He also examines how Europe obscured its debt to the East. At the moment I am looking at Hodson's account of the development of Western racism.Hodson lays out his ideas very clearly. Unfortunately I have heard of very few of the authors he cites,so am unable to assess quite how well-based his ideas are. But this book has made me look at the world afresh
