Final Fantasy Xi-Piano Collections / Various

In many ways, my opinion of the Final Fantasy XI: Piano Collection is a lot like the recent album by the Star Onions, Sanctuary. A lot of the tracks are very pleasant to listen to: "A New Horizon - Tavnazian Archipelago", "Ronfaure", "The Grand Duchy of Jeuno", "Whispers of the Gods", "Stargazing", "The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah", "The Cosmic Wheel". I find the rest a bit dull, especially since most of the source tracks for them were energetic. It sounds like they tried to recreate that tone playing it them on the piano, but in my opinion, it just doesn't work, especially in the case of "Fated Strife -Besieged-". Another complaint is, while the tracks that I do like sound nice, the album as a whole sounds a bit uninspired, as if the music is simply being played on the piano, rather than trying to do something interesting with it. Take, for instance, "The Forgotten City - Tavnazian Safehold" on the Star Onions' Music from the Other Side of Vana'diel album. They took the simple, if typical sounding, town theme and made it a completely different track. On this Piano Collection though, it just feels like more of the same, just on the piano. "The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah" is nice. But let's be serious. Is there any incarnation of it that doesn't?

Final Fantasy XI Piano Collection, was the first piano collection for FFXI, and would be followed up in 2008 with an official release, and a different song list. However, this earlier version was an exclusive part of the Final Fantasy XI Original Soundtrack Premium Box, and therefore has not been officially released in any other capacity. And yet here it is. Simply put, if you want the true version of this cd, you must buy the FFXI box set. If you don't want to shell out $200+ just to get a barely 39 minute CD, then here you go. Distant Worlds is the only song that stands out on this CD, as it is such a beautiful song, the rest are on the good side of mediocre.Song List:1. The Federation of Windurst - 3:502. Rabao - 4:163. Just how I remembered!

Since purchasing this album for a game I'd hardly (and still've hardly) played back at its release for sake of an in-game item, I've been pleased to've found the music itself has more than justified itself over the years. When I find myself wanting more than the still of night to accompany me as I drift to sleep, I've let this album play straight through, such that just hearing the first few notes fills me with anticipatory contentment. Sure, some of the later track are much more upbeat, if not outright relatively loud, so those may not be suited to this purpose, but if you're looking for nighttime music, I'd recommend giving this a try.

ピアノっていうのは個人的にはいつも厳かなメロディーを奏でるものだと思っていたんですが、ちょっと昔に初めてFF4のピアノ・コレクションズを聞いてそのイメージが一変したんです。こんなに躍動感があるのかと、弾いてる人も楽しいだろうなと伝わって来ました。それからずっと5.6.7.8・・・と聞いてきましたが、今回のはPremium Boxの方も含めてちょっとがっかりです。私の中ではFF11の原曲はFFシリーズの中でも上位を行くものが多いのですが、そのせっかくの原曲の良さをつぶしてしまっているというか・・・。今回「豊かで深みのある演奏」を目指されていたようですが、一言で言ってしまえば厳かすぎたんじゃないかと思います。そんな厳かな曲調なのに、たとえばなぜビシージの曲を選ばれたのかという理由も不明瞭ですし。この曲こそ、以前のピアノコレクションズにも多くあったジャズテイスト(?)でアレンジ/演奏してほしかったです。それに、Premium Boxでもすでに出しているんですから、わざわざ同じようなアレンジ/演奏にしなくてもよかったのにって思います。

酷評の方もいるようですが、私はピアノで弾けるようにアレンジされたこのＣＤも好きです。人の手で弾くには限界もあると思うので、どうしても気になるアレンジがあるのは仕方がない気がしますしそれを考えると綺麗にアレンジされているな～という印象を受けました。　ただ、このＣＤの評価は☆５なのですが、中古と表記されていないのにＣＤに指紋がついていました。今回１１のサントラを数枚購入し、その中の１つだけ開けた瞬間ケースが外れるということが起こったのでこちらのＣＤもすぐに確認したところ、曲目などが書かれている冊子は折られたような跡はあるしＣＤを確認すると指紋がついている状態でした。　音楽が問題なく聴けるので手続きが面倒ですし交換まではしませんが新品だと思って購入したので正直ガッカリでした。
