Wow . . . leaves me thinking . . .even when the book is done.
Wow . . . I love a book that once I’m done reading, it leaves me thinking about all the connections I am making now that it is over. While the narrator is only in fifth grade, that fact quickly falls away when the teacher explains to the students that they will be working on a new curriculum this year. The story focuses on the relationships of three students and their families. Deja who lives in a homeless shelter, dears anyone to give her a hard time or the other new student in class. She finds herself intrigued by the girl who always has a smile for her. As these students find their “communities” they also learn about 9/11 and how it relates to not only themselves, but all Americans. Charming, thought provoking, a definite keep in my library.

Very intense, descriptive
No dislike. I saw all on TV. Such a sad day. I felt they deserved my attention. Just can't read too many with that subject

A good read, on a difficult subject.
Dr. Rhodes delivers a powerful and provocative text about rembering 9/11. Dejá, a homeless 10 year old in a new school, befriends Saleen a Turkish Muslim, and Ben a precious transplant from Arizona. Together they learn the history of 9/11 and its relation to the "American dream"This book is optimistic, if not a but didactic, but explores the events of 9/11 and arrives at a conclusion that now, after 4 years of divisive rhetoric from our president feels a tad biased and expresses more unity than we see at present, but gives hope, nonetheless.

Excellent book. Highly recommend
Excellent book. Would be a great read aloud for late August/September. Really shows the reader different long term effects of 9/11, helping see situations are more than meets the eye. 5th grade and up to understand and grasp the seriousness of what happened and how real these characters could be. We do a lot to remember 9/11 in my class but still felt 4th graders weren’t quite ready for this.

When you can clearly remember the day it happened
It is challenging to comprehend that there are those who do not share the experience. This book is an excellent example of sharing the facts and personal stories that resulted from one of the pivotal events in modern history. There is much sensitivity given to the subject and great respect given to everyone who’s lives were indelibly stamped by the tragedy.

Powerful!
Powerfully written. Excellent for middle school students. Provides lots of information, that students can further investigate. Celebrates difference, and now to forgive.
