I have tried the "needle" pull-through way to floss, which is challenging to say the least. These do the trick (with a bit of a learning curve). Yes there is plastic waste - I hate that. But I MUST floss to protect the teeth with braces, so I guess I have to use plastic.I may try Flossfish, which has mixed reviews - Slate is very spendy but who knows, maybe worth it for the years ...braces take.

As an adult with new braces, this works for OK in areas where the teeth are generally aligned. The arch wire needs to be sitting parallel to both of the 2 teeth that are sitting next to each other. When teeth are recessed or pushed forward or angled, then the floss is not able to get into the space between the two teeth. The arch wire cannot be too close or too far away from the interdental space between the two teeth. I am unsure if I will continue to use as I need a mirror to see which teeth I can use it with.It is designed so that the slender arm will bend away the gum tissue as the flosser moves past the tooth. However, it takes some practice to know which interdental spaces wilo work and which dont and to avoid pressing into the gum and mouth tissues. I've ordered "threaded" flossers to see if they are easier to use.The handle of this flosser has a bendable, very thin 1/2" long plastic arm containing 3 teeny "picks" about 1/16" on two sides. (Think of 2 extremely short bristles on opposite sides of a bottle brush.) The intent is to "brush" plaque away between the teeth. It is not thin enough to go between 12 of my upper and lower front teeth. The hard plastic bristles are not comfortable when used between the teeth where they do fit and unlike a dedicated interdental brush, its not effective. When using, my gums are quite sore from the plastic "picks" rubbing against them.This product is not suited for someone who doesnt wear braces because the dental floss cannot remain taught. The arm of the plastic will instead bend inward to a 45° angle and the floss will stretch downward about 1/2 inch on the back plastic arm and 1/4 inch on the front arm.This results in both arms pressing painfullly inward on the gumline in order for the floss to make contact with the gumline.

Platypus Orthodontic Flossers for Braces were recommended by several of our friends whose kids have braces. Although my son and daughter do not love flossing, this floss makes it much easier while they are wearing braces. The floss is strong and doesn’t break. It works great around the brackets. They are a bit pricey, but worth it for the convenience (and fewer complaints from my kids).
