Not exactly a start-from-scratch book
I've been playing musical instruments for many decades, and the advanced Rubank books are my standard go-to for warmup drills and exercises... But it's been a long time since I started an instrument completely from scratch, so I'd forgotten what the Elementary Method books are like, and I've never tried playing trombone before. I was expecting a little more "elementary" stuff at the beginning -- like how to hold the trombone, how to put it together, how to clean it and oil it, how to blow into the mouthpiece, etc, etc. This book has none of that -- you'll need to get that from other sources, but fortunately there are many YouTube videos to fill that void.It also doesn't spend much time on teaching musical notation -- which is fine if this is your second instrument, but could be problematic if you're starting from nothing. So, this isn't really a negative review, but just a caveat -- if you don't know anything about playing a musical instrument already, this might not be an ideal first book.

For Any Musical Instrument Training, Rubank is Legendary.
Much like the Universal Method "bible" for general music theory, practice and education, the Rubank series of musical instrument books published by Hal Leonard Corporation can't be beat. For each instrument the Rubank method book series starts with Elementary, elevates to Intermediate and, finally Advanced Method books for nearly all instruments. (Advanced Method books often come in two volumes because of the substantial amount of material provided, consisting mostly of exercises and etudes.)I bought this Rubank Elementary Method for Trombone or Baritone book for my granddaughter who decided she wanted to take up trombone after playing tuba and sousaphone in her school bands. So I bought a trombone for her and the first book I thought about to go with the trombone was this Rubank method book. She loves it, and is making excellent progress pursuing her dream of becoming a competent trombone player.I am a woodwind player. My Rubank Method book collection includes Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced Methods for saxophone, clarinet and flute. Elementary methods not only inform the reader about the specific instrument on topic, but also provides a solid foundation in music theory. These books can be used individually, or in a class setting. They are very affordable ($5.95 to $6.95) and have been around since about 1934, with newer volumes appearing as they were developed. For yourself, or for a favorite student at any level, the Rubank Method series is the best value you can get for your music education dollar.

Great for back to basics exercises.
Its is nice to go back to basics just to gradually build after keeping my trombone in its case for years now. This book makes practice fun and interesting just to see what level Im at. I went ahead and purchase the intermediate and advanced for the sake of hey, to complete the series!

Tried and Tested
The Rubank Elementary Method Trombone book has the most thorough fingering chart I know of. This means that no matter how far advanced a student gets after starting here, this book will still have an important part in their future development. I started playing using this book in 1975, and it's still my favorite of all the others I've seen.

Good beginner book.
I am a beginner on the baritone but play the trumpet so I am familiar with the Rubank method books. You really can go wrong with Rubank for a comprehensive beginner book. It is helpful to have some basic music reading skills and understanding of your instrument. Often used with private lesson instruction.

A great series of method books
A great series of method books, this one no exception. Dated in some ways but no less clear or effective for building a good technique and musical understanding.

Ottima didattica anglosassone
