Q: Can’t I just use the gears on my bike for resistance?

Secondly, set the trainer resistance to the highest. Now you can use bigger sprockets to lighten up the resistance to the level you prefer. Be warned, this set up will eat up your wheel faster, also wear out the trainer's roller faster. Noise also constantly at the loudest. It's safe to try if you like this way of setup."
