Q: Does it stay soft like some of the cheap undercoatings of the past or does it get hard?

I does not get hard -hard,which is better so it does not crack. its also,not soft to touch,good product for the price!

Q: How long does this coating last? Do you have to apply it every year?

Has lasted for 4 years with only peeling in a few small spots due to poor cleaning prior to applying

Q: could I use this on a salt-water boat? Hull and deck?

I don't think I would. It worked for under coating several of our Autos. But is somewhat messy while spraying. I think if you put this on a boat, you would probably get it on you every time you got in it. Remember this is tar base. Using it under a vehicle is one thing, but you would be exposed to it on a boat more so. Not saying it won't work. Good luck
