Q: does this have the ability to pair to multiple devices at once like the Bose qc35?

Yes you can pair to multiple devices concurrently. It's mentioned in Sony manual but not very clear. I have it paired to my Windows 10 laptop and iPhone 7 concurrently. In this example. Pair to iPhone 7 first, then in Bluetooth settings, disconnect it. Now pair to Windows 10 machine, if you right click on speaker icon and choose playback devices, right click the Headset profile and disable it. Now go back to Bluetooth settings in iPhone 7 and choose the mdr1000x profile to connect. Now Windows 10 machine will play music, videos, and iPhone will take incoming calls. You use same trick with other devices.

Q: Can the sony mdr-1000x be use for phone calls? does it have a microphone built-in to respond to a call?

Yes it can, but the sound quality for the person listening to your voice is terrible(!) The mic is located on the top of the ear-piece and as such picks up all kinds of room-noise that blends with your voice. Hence, useless for phone calls. As such, returning them.

Q: is it necessary to play listen to music for using the NC feature?

No. You can use the NC feature w/out any music. As for the unit shutting off after 10 min, you can customize to have the headphones shut off after 5 min, 10min, 20min, etc, or Never. By default, they never shut off by themselves. But if you want to conserve battery it's prob best to have them shut off after a set time frame of 'inactivity'.

Q: Does the head band plastic crack easily? I've seen quite a lot reviews where that was the case.

The headband has a metal portion on top. It connects the joint of the left and right ear cup. It is sturdy and if you do not abuse it. I dont see why it will not last =) I have a fairly huge head and it is working good, not even a cracking sound heard
