Wonderful RomCom. Must See
If you have never seen this one- it is a keeper. It was back in Meg Ryan's RomCom years, and it is a very cute story. If you have never seen "An Affair to Remember" with Cary Grant, that is referenced in this film- so do the crazy thing and watch that black and white film first.

What IS IT about this movie?
I'm not sure if this will help anyone, but at least for entertainment's sake, here we go: this movie cast a spell on me. That has to be what happened. I watched it once on a whim because it was on Netflix a while ago, and while I had seen it before, something was different this time around. I watched this movie, and then I watched it again. And again. And AGAIN. I watched this movie 4 times in a row, consecutively, without pausing. When it got taken down from Netflix, I ran to Amazon and bought 3 copies on DVD: one for my apartment, one for my parent's house, and one for my car. My CAR, y'all. So I am officially declaring myself an expert on You've Got Mail (1998). Let's start with the positives: this movie is extremely charming. The world building for 90s New York at the start of the Internet bubble is quaint and sweet. I like the introduction we get to the world of these characters, from the individual shops on a commuter's walking route to the odd furniture choices for apartments none of us could ever afford in the real world today (who would put a bed with a puffy yellow bedspread diagonally on a corner???). Meg Ryan's bookstore is so cute, the perfect setting for a rom com. There's one frog plushie wearing a suit behind her when she's at the register that I just absolutely adore. Some of the shots in this film are so cheekily full of themselves that they circle back around to quaint and make me smile; my favorite is one scene where Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks are standing over a sign that says, "WE'RE TALKING" towards the end of the movie. The soundtrack is also completely perfect. A lot of Harry Nilsson, the Cranberries, and the "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" interpolations throughout the film leading up to the grand reveal at the end is just so, so sweet. It gets me every time. There is also a golden retriever in much of the film who does such a FANTASTIC JOB, GOOD BOY, GREAT ACTING BUDDY! Now, onto the negatives. If you're into rom coms then you may not be surprised by this, but the plot is... not great. This is a Pride and Prejudice retelling that doesn't meet the measure of the original because it fails to replicate what made that story so good: two people setting aside their pride to fix their mistakes and meet each other on equal footing, to be deserving of one another in the end. THIS couple should NOT end up together in the end, even though Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are independently great in this film. This is in fact one of the most cynical narratives that I have ever seen dressed up as a love story, where capitalist corporate greed WINS IN THE END despite collectivist action and the wealthy man in charge gets everything he's ever wanted without consequence and without learning anything. Meanwhile, the trampled-upon woman who's had her life upturned has to silently bear the cross of his repeated treachery and inexplicably ends up excusing his questionable behavior so the whole movie can wrap up in a nice little bow. The dialogue also just sucks at points; Dave Chapelle says the exact same line twice in a row during one scene, and another actor insists on the weirdest emphasis on random words in another. I hate this movie. It is objectively not a GOOD movie. And yet! And yet, I cannot stop watching it. This movie is a comfort to me. My advice to you, if you've read this far: don't think about it too hard. Enjoy the fantasy of this movie and let it wrap around you like a big, fluffy, unserious blanket. For your sanity's sake, I hope that it doesn't ensnare you as it's done me.

"Vous avez un message": Excellente comédie avec deux grands acteurs. Deux thèmes sont ici abordés, où la psychologie des acteurs et leurs comportements sont très bien retracés, avec une grande justesse: Thème 1) Les grandes surfaces tuent les petits commerces (ici: secteur librairie); Thème 2) Deux êtres se rencontrent grâce à internet (ce qui aujourd'hui est devenu courant), se découvrant l'un l'âme soeur de l'autre. Ce film est un bonheur.
