Any tips for getting the lid off? My tool has too wide of a gap.

No I’m able to use both hands and start at the twelve o’clock and work the lid off slowly. Make sure you have pulled the air lock out prior to opening.

The lid that came is not what is pictured. There is no black rubber ring around the air lock hole. I have concerns about this. Is thi correct?

The black part shown is the rubber grommet. It goes in the 1/2" hole drilled in the lid and you put the 3/8" stem of the airlock in the grommet. Your vendor will be happy to replace it or you can pick one up at the hardware store. 1/2"x3/8"

How do you get this thing open?

If you have clicked it down all the way you will need to slit the skirt or pull the rip tab. To save fingers there is a tool for that B000KKPBFE, but in future check that you got a lid with a rubber seal and just lay it on the bucket. Set a brick on top to keep it down. Can I use the same fermenter for beer and wine or will it leave residue when I brew beer?

Buying a new one because I used it for sourkrout and then my next two batches of beer spoiled. I'd never had a batch spoil before in 10 years if brewing
