LIGHT IT! By Fulcrum, 20072-401 MultiFlex LED Floor Magnifier Lamp, Silver, Single pack

My 86 year old mom has tried multiple hand held magnifiers over the years, some lighted, some not, in her efforts to keep reading after a diagnosis of dry macular degeneration. We decided to try this lamp due to the combination of LED lights, gooseneck positioning, and the strength of the magnifier. In the month since the light was delivered my mom's life has expanded. She loves this light. With her hands free, she can work her large-print crosswords puzzles and is even reading magazines again. We are thrilled with the light and are so grateful that her quality of life is better because of it. Our one wish for improvement with this light would be for a more weighty base for stability. November 28, 2010 I thought I'd update my original review some 18 months after we originally purchased this terrific light. Mom still loves her light, in fact, Thanksgiving day I overheard her tell a friend that it was her life saver. We've had no troubles with the light since it was purchased. The weight of the base hasn't been an issue for Mom and that is surprising because she is so wobbly. I saw that it was on sale today and am thinking of buying it for my husband who also has vision troubles. I truly recommend this light to anyone needing hands-free lighted magnification. August, 2012 Another update. Mom (now 89) still loves her light and uses it every day. No troubles with the LED lights, the base, or the gooseneck. Everything is still working perfectly. I'm so glad we purchased the light. September, 2014 Latest on Mom's light. This light is like the ever-ready bunny. I keeps ticking along. Mom, now 91, continues to use the light every day. Still no troubles with the LED lights, the base, the plug, or the gooseneck. This practically perfect light is the best thing I've purchased for Mom.

I really love the Fulcrum magnifying lamp! It stands nicely on its weighted base, the light is so bright I didn't even realize that I didn't have my floor lamp on last night, and it has a very large magnifying area with perfect magnification to keep the surface of the lamp a good 7" from my 18-count crosstitch - plenty of room to pull my needle and thread through. (I saw where some reviewers felt the base wasn't heavy enough for stability, but I found it plenty heavy. Sure, you do better to hold the pole while you adjust the neck of the magnifier, but that's no big deal.) The little bifocal lense has come in handy, too. I like the way the base is designed, so that the pole comes up from one end - I can slip the base under my chair so the neck easily reaches my work area and at the perfect height. The flexible neck works very well for positioning the head perfectly; it feels sturdy and I always handle adjustments gently, so I see no reason it shouldn't last. The shorter poles screw together tightly and don't wobble at the connection points, and the directions were clear enough (it's mostly intuitive anyway, but be careful to follow each step; there is something that you might not think about). The ONLY thing I'm bummed about is that the LED lights are not replaceable, but at this price, if I get even "just" 50,000 hours (that's almost 6 years of continuous use, so...) from them, it will be worth it - but only if I can find this lamp again when the time comes to replace. Hmm, maybe I should just get another now. *One warning: be SURE that the head of the lamp is facing down before you turn it on, and don't let it shine directly in your eyes at anytime (led lights are basically small lasers). I didn't notice which way I had it pointing when I set it up and hit the on button, but luckily wasn't looking right at it!

From the decription of the product I was expecting a bright light with the 12 LEDs etc but was dissapointed to find it wasnt super bright. I bought this for my girlfriend as she started beading projects and its too dark in our basement. While this does function very well and seems to be pretty good build quality, I really wish it was much brighter and had a built in dimmer so it could be adjusted. If you are using this a foot or two away from your object it has decent light output but for our purpose of having the light illumination for a general area it isnt the best, look elsewhere. We also dont use the magnifying glass as it hasnt really been necesary and it makes me a little dizzy looking through due to the distortion. When I did try and use the magnifier it was hard to make precise movements as it completely throws your eyes perception and field of depth off. It was an awkward feeling and also not as useful as I thought it would be. Maybe if we get a tiny splinter or something at some point it could be usefull. Dont plan on staring through the magnifier for long periods though as you may get dizzy or a headache. The base of the lamp is heavy which is good as it prevents the lamp from tipping over when extended out to the side. If I could go back in time I would not purchase this lamp and I would find something brighter but its all based on what you plan on using it for.

I bought this for my mother who is almost blind from diabetes and glaucoma. She likes to help her grandson with his homework which was nearly impossible before she got this light, especially in the evening in lowlight environments. She is so impressed with it. I think this is a perfect gift for anyone on your list who has vision troubles. Once they actually start using it and realize how much it helps them, they will love it. The first one I bought her she keeps by her bedside. I recently bought her another for in the living room and she actually came to me asking me to get her another one so I did. That said a lot to me because she never asks for anything. I give it 5 stars for how much it helps my mother. However, I have a couple issues with the build quality. The light and magnifier part is built well but the base needs to be heavier. It has a cheap feel to it and, depending on how low you adjust the arm, it can tip over which has happened a couple times. My biggest complaint is that the pole is not attached to the base so if you try to pick it up and move it, the base falls from the pole. I think the pole needs to screw into the base. For this reason, it's not easily portable so you may end up having to purchase multiples. If you were to drop it onto a hard surface it could easily damage it. Overall, I highly, highly recommend this. It has genuinely enriched my mother's life and she is able to read, write and do things that she hasn't been able to do for years. It's amazing how this one simple item can help her so much.

the light and magnifier are ok and work pretty much as you expect. it puts out a reasonable amount of light from multiple points, so you don't see lots of shadows on things you're looking at. it has a *major* design flaw, however. the vertical pole has merely "rests" in the base. it is not attached. when the light is sitting in one place, it works ok. when you go to move the light, whether it be to take it from one room to another, to vacuum under it, or merely to move it closer to where you are sitting, the natural way to do this is to grasp the pole to lift the lamp. if you try this, you end up holding the top of the lamp in your hand with the base sitting on the floor and a wire dangling between the two parts. you then have to "reassemble" the lamp by carefully tucking the wire back into the pole, and re-inserting the pole into the base. they designed it to run either off D batteries or off an AC adaptor. so the light would be ideal for use around the house, allowing you to take it where it's need to work on a repair project here, a sewing project over there, etc. however, the design flaw pretty much kills the ability to move the lamp around easily. in my view, this is a catastrophically dumb design - there are any number of ways the could have designed the lamp to avoid this problem.

This is a good product and worth the purchase. I gave it 3 stars overall, because the base separates from the pole when it is moved. There is no screw or other fastener. So when my mother tries to move the lamp, she naturally grabs the pole to slide it over. Since the base is weighted to keep the center of gravity low (an excellent thing) the pole comes out and so does the wiring. It’s not a big problem to feed the wiring back into the pole and put it back in the base for me. However, seniors would have a very difficult time doing this, because the base is heavy and requires a person to spend a few minutes bent over near the ground. Perhaps I missed something in assembly, but I have studied the parts and instructions thoroughly without a solution

I really like this magnify light. It is easy to position, stays put, is plenty bright for my needs, and gives me the added visibility to thread a needle or read small print. It is simple with a on/off button. It's a great height as I work from my office chair. It can even travel with the use of batteries, but it comes with a power adapter so I can just plug it in. I had a clamp on arm type magnify lamp that continuously would come off my desk edge. This floor lamp is so much easier to work with.

I bought this lamp to help my eyes with needlework. I like to sit down and lean back in the sofa or chair when I work. The lamp/magnifier was very carefully packaged and included an AC adapter. The lamp comes in separate pieces that are easy to assemble with easy to follow instructions. The height of the lamp is just right for a seated position but can be somewhat modified by adjusting the angle and tilt of the gooseneck part, but it is not height-adjustable otherwise. The weight of the base is appropriately balanced and the lamp is light enough to carry or move around. The LEDs give off a smooth and strain-less glow. The magnifier is so powerful that I almost don't need my reading glasses. The on/off switch for the LEDs is placed on top of the lamp in a convenient location. I think that the product description provided on the Amazon site doesn't tell you that the LEDs cannot be replaced. However, they are supposed to last 10,000 hours which is plenty. Overall, very good product and excellent value.

Less is more. This lamp has a short arm, so you can draw it across your lap, but it is very flexible, so you can adjust it to whatever you need- reading, crafting, cross stitching/ embroidery. It reaches onto your lap, and the LED lights are bright on its target but do not irradiate every thing around or blind you. My husband and children can sit next to me without being disturbed by UFO like glare. The domed light reflects the light downwards, and the adjustable goose neck tilts to find the right angle. The magnifier works well and I find the lamp base is sturdy enough to hold my portable paper holder, so my cross stitch charts are easily readable. This is truly a crafter's light that works with reclinables, in the TV room, around people and is not costly. Avoid the 3 armed monster I just returned- get this instead!

THIS IS MY FIRST REVIEW WHERE I GAVE THREE STARS. SEE BELOW FOR MY UPDATED REVIEW. The pole doesn’t stay in the base because there's no means to fasten it in the base. So, when you move the magnifier, you have to slide it on the floor, or pick up the pole and base separately. No idea why it was made this way. As for the magnifying, that works well. I use it sometimes when sewing, especially when ripping out seams and stitches that are hard to see, buried in the fabric. UPDATE FEB 26, 2020: Due to Wovenflame’s comment a month ago.....thank you Wovenflame!.....I took the magnifier poles apart to see what I did wrong, and lo and behold I discovered there was threading inside the bottom of the bottom pole. I’m sure the instructions must’ve been to insert the pole into the base, not thread it into the base, not screw it into the base, and I am a “literal” person, so I inserted it, and of course, it does not hold. Today I started screwing it in. I turned and turned and turned and turned it, and WOW! it finally tightened! I am so happy. I was ready to get rid of this thing because I was tired of it not staying together. Once again, thank you Wovenflame for inciting me to look further into this! I have had the magnifier now for about four years. Works great. I keep it beside my sewing machine where sometimes I have to rip out tiny black stitches on black fabric! Ugh! This magnifier with its light comes to my rescue!

Bottom round pole should screw into base. BECAUSE if you lift up on lamp by the pole it dislodges from the base.

This was purchased after returning a desk-style, multi-arm magnifier that was too awkward for its intended use and location (didn't even turn it on!). This one is perfect! Anyone who complains that it has a sloppy fit did not read/follow the assembly directions. The tubes are threaded on the INSIDE and screw into the base for a secure fit. I use it for threading needles both for hand sewing and at a sewing machine (also taking out a splinter!). Although I never anticipated installing "D" batteries and using it while seated at a recliner, I have done that twice now and was impressed at the versatility. I like the generous size of the magnification area too. Great purchase, no regrets!

We used this to check for really small scratches in watches. My husband used it to magnify face of watches to prove that the numbers on the face are properly aligned and free of debris. This allows us to see imperfections in a diamond (black spots inside the diamond). We used this to check why the nib of a fountain pen is leaking. I use it as a floor lamp in conjunction with ceiling lights because the white light makes it easier for me to see my notes (my eyes get blurry when I don't have sufficient, bright light around me - I am nearsighted). All in all I am very happy with this lamp and so is my husband.
