Belleruche - Turntable Soul Music
Some funk, some Northern soul, some rock, some hip-hop -- but the end result is all Belleruche. "Northern Girls" has a groove that doesn't quit, with breathy vocals with a off-kilter jazz rhythm to them, and "Bump" has percussion that sounds almost live when thrown in with the wah-wah guitar. The horns that kick off "Minor Swing" are like a crazy big band. They seem to prefer syncopated rhythms, which gives their tracks a certain perky swing: listen to how "Bird Mess" emphasizes the downbeat. Even when they're more straightforward on the beat, like on "The Itch," Ricky Fabulous' guitar keeps things moving. The smooth "It'll Come" glides just like hot butter on a plate, and "Bought & Sold" ends the album on pure funk. Juicy.

Hot damn this is good...
Why hasn't this been reviewed? I found a copy of this and it sounded interesting and threw it in a mix (addicted to the shuffle...) and found myself gravitating toward certain songs that had this bluesy, hip hop kind of electronica over jazz sound that caused me to wonder who it was. Lo and behold, these songs all came from this album. It is infectious and is so smooth and so cool, not in a poser kind of way, but in the kind of way when you hear an artist that sounds fresh. Get this, put it on and I guarantee you'll be humming along. It stands out from the din of the musical soundscape today.Way cool, way good.

Belleruche - Turntable Soul Music
I bought this CD in good faith and wish I hadn't. Poor quality sound and continual hissing. I would advise anyone not to buy it!

Breathing new(ish) life into t**p-h*p
If you took Portishead, Mr. Scruff, Roisin Murphy, the Cinematic Orchestra and maybe a quarter each of Sia, Helicopter Girl and Erykah Badu, chopped them into little bits, put the bits into a bag and pulled them out one by one until you had enough to make a new band with, one of the possible random combinations would be Belleruche. Which is no bad thing, because if their music isn't exactly groundbreaking it certainly is well-crafted, engaging, intelligent and listenable. Not every track is quite as memorable as it should be but every debut is allowed its flaws and these don't stand in the way of some excellent and characterful music. At their best Belleruche ably stand comparison with any of the artists listed above and I'll be keenly watching to see what they do next.

Drab early nineties rehash
After giving this a good half a dozen listens and placing my trust in the other reviewers on this page I have to say that I really don't understand what all the fuss is about. We've been down the female vocalist, one guy on the turntables, another on the guitar road plenty times before. Turntable Soul Music is a very apt description of what Belleruche do - it's gentle, polished and unlikely to cause offense - it all adds up to a pretty tame listen."Northern Girls," kicks off the record with an energetic driving beat. Is it me, or can you not hear singer Katrin DeBoer's voice if you turn this up loud? It seems lost somewhere in the mix. I find the singing on this frail and pretty unremarkable, lacking the astonishing purity of a Skye Edwards, or the battered, haunting quality of Beth Gibbins. It's a play it safe voice - lacking in subtlety or raw emotional power. The tracks on this that really stand out are, "Minor Swing," with its infectious bouncing trombone driven rhythm - very good, awoke me from my slumber - and the gentle, wispy laments of,"Reflection,"and,"13:6:35." The rest is a largely drab set of passable tunes, a style rehashed from the early nineties for those who missed the boat the first time round.
