Phonics Volume 1 by Rock 'N Learn

Rock n Learn rocks!
I can't say enough about this video. It is great for early phonics training. It covers alphabet sounds, blends and silent e. It even introduced a few sight words and soft c and g sounds. This one video really does cover a lot of phonics lessons and conveniently sections them off so you can only work on one area at a time. My favorite part is that it teaches phonics as syllables. I studied speech pathology so I can really appreciate how important this is. "B" says "buh"... but it can also say "baa" or "beh" as in bat or bed. This video teaches vowel sounds first then the syllables made by adding consonants. It makes learning to blend each sound into words easier for the child! Watching this video daily for a week made my son a much better and fluid reader. Despite the fact my five year has severe ADHD, he made such a huge improvement I went and bought the entire 10 pack of preschool videos. (Not available on Amazon) I highly recommend this video. It is well planned, provides good practice opportunities and is entertaining. He continues to practice with this video once a week and is now learning sight words. In a few weeks he progressed from sounding out letters to reading almost any one syllable word and sounding out two syllable words. We just started phonics v. 2 today.

We love this series!
I am so happy with this DVD, and so is my 4-year old!My kid is weird; He has never interacted with any TV show or movie before (Blue's Clues, Dora, etc), but he happily sings along and practices with Rock N Learn. He's a smart kid but has struggled with sounding out letters and words. Now, he "reads" to himself and practices sounding out the letters, like he has been taught by the dvd. I watch with him we practice the "lessons" together. It's made a huge difference in his retention. My only complaint is that the songs are annoyingly catchy... you will catch yourself singing them when your kid isn't even around. Songs are a great way to enhance learning, so I am all for it!*Update* a year laterMy kid still loves these DVDs and the site words are helping a lot with the words he is learning in kindergarten. They're great with sounding words out, which is the best way to teach reading!

My Students Love This
I bought this movie for a rainy day activity for my students. They love this moving and are constantly singing phonics rules to me. I'd highly recommend this to teachers and parents. If you need an activity for a day when you are having a sub or there will be an indoor recess, this will entertain your first grade or kindergarten students. For parents, if your child knows the alphabet, they'll be able to enjoy this movie. It's certainly more educational than most cartoons and the songs are pretty cute. I'm in my early thirties and recognize the tunes some of the music is set to. I'd mainly recommend this product because the kids all seem to like it and it is genuinely educational. Any fun way to get young children engaged in reading is great as far as I am concerned.

All my 3 kids learned to read because of this
My daughter and my son both started reading 3-letter words when they were between 3 and 4 years old. Rock N' Learn's Phonics had been a very helpful tool in their learning. Now, my daughter is 8 and my son is 6 years old, they are enjoying reading chapter books. In this video, think it's very smart of them to show the lips/mouth while sounding out the letters. It gives the kids a good visual on how letters should be pronounced.

Back to the 80's, Lacked Phonetic Content, Lots of WORDS! :-)
I'm so grateful for Amazon, and the products they offer, because I like to "Preview" any material before showing it to my grandson. And boy am I glad I spent the $1.99 to see the instant video, rather than spending $15 for the order plus S & H!--Outdated in Structure & Music: OMG! I'm ready to listen to some old Cyndi Lauper, LOL. The Music takes you back to the 80's, and recited the word "PUNK". Since there are so many variations of that word, why is it in this video? And how will the word benefit our children? They learn enough adverse words from their environments as it is.--Boring: I have to agree with the review that mentions how boring the DVD is, and the intermittent visits with the "Lips". The DVD was poorly put together and lacked cultural diversity throughout the entire DVD. I'm not saying play "Rap" music because I hate it, but let me know this is 2012.--Too much emphasis on the Consonants and not vowels: They lazily and incorrectly pronounce the words phonetically. Example, the work TRUCK, was pronounced (TR---UCK) rather than TR--U--CK, (SLIP) pronounced SL--IP, instead of SL---I--P. And ALLLLLL of the words throughout the video was pronounced in that manner which presents confusion for the teaching process. Most teachers and parents will teach words in syllables, with emphasis on the "Vowels" & consonants.--Lot os Words & Colors: I gave (3) stars because it was colorful, contained several word combinations and at least 200+ words which will prove beneficial with repitition, along with very brief attempts to engage the viewer. I presume those moments were so brief due to the mass amount of words in the DVD.--The video isn't totally bad, however it will require you as the parent to reverse how the words are pronounced. I would advise EVERYBODY by the $1.99 Instant Video first to gain your own opinion.

Decent songs; surprisingly comprehensive
These songs are catchy and less annoying than children's music tends to be but the animation is kind of cheap and I think that detracts a little bit. I am pleasantly surprised by how much and how well phonics are covered, but it keeps my daughter's attention less than I like and I have to make her watch it. She doesn't request to watch it. It is a nice supplemental tool.

Perfect for all ages, as well as ESOL kiddos!
This is perfect for all ages! No one realizes how many kiddos in Title 1 schools struggle to read. I taught 3rd grade summer school, and there were at least 20 needing this. They learned so much, and they didn’t feel like they were watching a Kindergarten style/babyish video. I teach 5th grade, and occasionally, students come to me without the ability to read. This will be great for them, as well.

... accent and strange looking mouth this is a very good tool for all young learners
Apart from the American accent and strange looking mouth this is a very good tool for all young learners. They will remember as it is designed to sink in without being boring.
