I usually look at the negative reviews of a product before purchasing it and the negative reviews on this device are quite negative. I'm not sure why, however it is easy to use and seems to deliver the correct results. I used it to determine the percent moisture in my honey and was delayed to discover it was all from 16 to 17.5% moisture. Well within acceptable limits. If I should break it, I'll buy another one just like it!

Finally! Alright, the first one was delivered and the dioptric oil leaked all over, very strong smell and it even melted the plastic on the box. This unit was returned.The second unit received the calibration dioptric oil was in the bottle, cap was on tight.. good job!!Calibration was simple follow the directions. After placing a small drop on the shiny side of the crystal then lay it shiny oil side down on the blue prizism of the refractometer close the plastic daylight plate down and carefully look through and adjust to the mark indicated on the brix scale. Quality seems pretty good and the tools and box is a must for optical tool.

I ordered this refractometer, because I had a lot of uncapped honey frames at the end of this year's season. I couldn't shake out any liquid, so I did extract. However, the extracted honey seemed thinner than normal. It ran very quickly through the strainers. A quick check with the refractometer revealed a moisture content of 19%, i.e. still below the 20% threshold, while honey from uncapped frames showed 17.5%. A sample of capped heather honey tested as 21%. Heather honey is generally higher in moisture content, up to 22% are allowed. So all these tests showed plausible values. It is essential though that the refractometer is calibrated before being used. The good thing is that this refractometer comes with the necessary calibration block and oil. Overall good value for money.
