Will the space between the two arms fit a firebird electric guitar?

We cannot answer this completely. The one we have is about 4 1/2 inches wide and fits a regular classical guitar. That is all we can say about it. Hope this helps.

Can this hold a mandolin?

I'm not sure the size/weight of typical mandolins, but my initial guess is the gap between the 2 pronged mount may be too far apart...it's 7" from inside prong to inside prong. Hope that helps. If it'll fit in that gap, I'd say go for it...the single prong mount can be put in any position you want.

Does this feel more or less safe than a conventional neck mount?

not 100% sure what a "neck mount" is but I can tell you it has worked perfect for me - has not moved off the wall no matter what - love it!

Pay attention to mounting holes on plates and where the support pieces are threaded to stop.

When installing both mounting plates, be aware that the support pieces are threaded to stop at a certain point, and you'll want to orient the mounting plate so the support pieces are in the correct position, otherwise you'll end up with either a loose part, or a part that is not in the correct position.
