On to my second set 8 years later
Bought these in 2016 and it is now 2024. Upon inspection this year it looks like the rubber is getting a bit dry rotted so I don't want it to fall off into the pipe and be lost in the sewer line. It has worked multiple times and has prevents at least a dozen basement floodings as our line is prone to backing up. Simple concept and we have a water alarm around it as it does allow for maybe a cup of water around the ball area before it finally seals. Great product

Hope I don't have to ever actually test this, but if so, it sure seems like it would do the job.
This installed into my 4" floor drain in basement just fine and has a nice snug fit once tightened down. This is only put in the finished portion of the basement floor drains, so fi the water actually does back up, it will still flow out of the floor drains in the unfinished portion and eventually end up in the sewer before hitting the finished area. Our sewer is also below the basement floor level. If the sewer line backs up too, then I'm screwed either way and this wouldn't do any good. Putting one in the sewer drain wouldn't help in that case as it would just end up pushing the sewage out the toilet in the basement, or worse, out of the bathrooms in the upper floors. Putting a check valve such as this in a sewer line may also violate some local ordinances, but I didn't look that up since I wasn't putting it on the sewer line anyway. With all the flooding of recent rains in our area, we were fortunate not to lose power as the sump pump was running every 17 seconds, so had that stopped, I shudder to think what may have ended up on the floor, although that certainly would have been a good test of this flood guard drain insert. I may be reviewing a battery back-up sump system next, although the recent rains would likely have overwhelmed a battery sump as well.

Easy to install
Easy install. Not sure if it works yet because we haven’t had a backup yet. Says made in China in description but the one I received is made in USA. Bonus

Lube the float rod before installing
I found the directions in the bottom of the box after we installed. You're supposed to lube the float rod so that it is not corroded by sewer gases and continues to go up and down. Other than that, it seems to be a well built, heavy, quality product. I have two basement floor drains in an older Chicago home and one is slightly bigger than the other. It fit well in one and I have just ordered another. My sewer only backs up every seven years so it may be a while before I get to test it. We have multiple water issues in our basement so I have also used RadonSeal crack repair (which I also highly recommend) and have ordered RadonSeal PipeTite Repair Kit. Good luck with your water issues!

Great design
Awesome idea. Great design. Should work perfect for my for drains in my garage. My gutters tie into the same 4" pipe as my for drains, if it rains really hard for an extended amount of time, the floor drains back up into my nice garage. This should fix that.

Didn't Work at Preventing Suds Backup...
I had high hopes for this Flood Guard. It was difficult to find one in a local brick and mortar store, so I was excited to see this on Amazon for a reasonable price. Even though it appeared to be high quality, was easy to install, and fit my drain without any issues, it still didn't work at preventing suds backup when using the laundry machine. (UPDATE: Instead of one star I raised this to three to be fair. I orgionally needed something to remove laundry soap suds from coming up the drain and was told that this would do the trick. Unfortunately, It did nothing to remove the suds and that is why I initially gave it one star. After being told by several sources that this isn't meant for keeping suds from coming up the drain, I am bumping up my star count to three. I have never had an issue with water back up prior to using this, but we also had the drain completely plugged for a while. We decided to take that plug out and replace it with this. While I can't say if it works or not (since we had it completely plugged before), I can say that we never experienced water backup issues since this product has been in there.)

Stops backflow
Used liquid wrench on screws for ease of tightening. Plunger seal completely stops back flow.

Needs to be modified
This is a good product but I use this to take excess water out of my basement trap.I remove the sewer pipe 4 inch cover so the water drains out into the street sewer system. There is a backup plate which can stop any sewer returning into the pipe. However, this plunger is always down and sewer odors can be emitted. I correct this by putting a small spring (with little tension) around the metal plunger arm (on top of the bar), and this hold up the ball plunger and when water accumulates the weight pushes down and the water goes into the sewer system.
