Star Trek: The Original Series: The Complete Series

Love this series and was pleased to find all seasons in one set! The plastic case could be better though, too many discs having to stack on top of each other may lead to damage. We bought a different notebook-with-sleeves type storage thing for them to keep them safe. Other than that, happy with set. The image quality is sharper than when I watched it on tv in the 60s, but not so sharp as to make it look completely different, which is the way I like it; otherwise it just looks wrong ;)

Four things make this collection a must-have for any real fan of the original series. Personally, I rarely ever saw an episode without ads, and most of the time those ads were long and drawn out, ruining the continuity. This collection is a breath of fresh air as it simply flows from one scene to another with the short blackout period in between. No 8 minute commercials making you forget what episode it even is ! In addition since the episodes are in their entirety, and not edited for commercials, the flow of a significant number of them is greatly improved giving more believability to the storyline. When it comes to improved quality, its no doubt that the visual clarity and sound are at their best. 1080 on bluray looks good on a 75 inch all day, while the sound clarity is spot on. In my opinion the improved quality of the special effects and overall picture help to bring a series that originally looked about as realistic as the Batman series from that period up to the quality of a technicolor full length motion from around the same time. Kids growing up right now could appreciate the stories in a show thats 60 years old, and be able to enjoy the picture quality and special effects because theyve been brought up to date. Are the special effects and overall picture quality perfect? No. But they're good enough to improve the overall presentation of this series and bring it into the 21st century. Five Stars.

Ordered it on a whim. Forgot I did so when they showed up I was pleasantly surprised. The price wasn't all that great but it wasn't all that bad. I'll watch them eventually.

Arrived on time and undamaged. First time watching the complete original series and it did not disappoint. Lots of fun seeing how things got started. If you’re watching the complete Star Trek collection in chronological order there are some discrepancies, but some things had to be done differently to make things work. Ultimately, lots of fun definitely a must have for any Star Trek fan.

This is a review for the Steelbook Blu-ray Complete Original Star Trek Series 1966-1969. Episodes on each disc are listed below. The Steelbook version was not much more than the std Blu-ray set when I ordered, so I chose it for 2 reasons: The white discs are easier to read, and the books look better IMO. The outer box graphics are ok, and the 3 books look nice, but they’re really “tinbooks” – thin metal. The inner spindles Hold up to 4 discs on each side. They do the job if careful, but I doubt they’ll stand up to any abuse. If you have kids or are meat fingered, I recommend buying cases that have easier access. Amazon’s poor packing destroyed one set. Next set arrived undamaged. I see a lot of reviews about disc media damaged in shipping. For protection, Amazon should bubblewrap any disc set by default. This set has 82 Shows on 20 Discs in 3 Steelbooks. There are 3 Pilots and 79 episodes. Episodes are in broadcast order, not production order. The 3 Pilots are 2 versions of the 1st pilot “The Cage” and a full version of the 2nd Pilot “Where No Man Has Gone Before”. “The Cage” was edited and aired in 2 parts as “The Menagerie 1&2” in episodes 11&12. The 2nd Pilot “Where No Man Has Gone Before” introduced many iconic characters and sold NBC on the show. It was edited and broadcast as episode 3 using the same name. In 1986, the complete “Where No Man Has Gone Before” pilot aired with added segments featuring Gene Roddenberry. That is the version is in this set. 1080p Blu-ray quality is as excellent overall and worth the purchase or upgrade over 480p DVD. A 4K version would be pointless overkill IMO. The original films were painstakingly restored before transfer, but only so much can be fixed. Some insignificant irreparable defects are present, and occasional scenes are subpar, but that isn’t surprising due to the era these were produced. You really can’t expect better transfer from abused antique celluloid. Viewers of Trek reruns in the 70’s will appreciate how really amazing they look. The additional features are mostly if not entirely in SD. Despite that, they’re interesting, sometimes funny and enjoyable to watch. Most were carried over from the 2004 DVD version, and a few added in 2009 for blu-ray release. I don’t think there is additional content newer than that. Episodes can be watched with original or enhanced effects. I think that is why there isn’t a play all or auto play function which some reviews complain of. That’s a minor inconvenience at worst. Supposedly there’s an option to toggle between effects while watching an episode, but I haven’t tried it. Unfortunately, if watching with original effects, an annoying camera icon pops up when enhanced effects are available for a scene. There doesn’t seem to be an option to disable it. That is the worst thing about this set and worth a star downgrade. If anyone has figured out how to disable the “cam icon” popup, please comment. Audio options are 7.1 DTS Master HD, or 2 channel Mono. Some reviews mention audio level issues, but I think it depends on equipment capability. If you have audio issues, try the Mono option. YRMV, but most newer TVs or sound systems should have enough adjustment for a suitable listening level with either option. I always choose DTS because even if playing through 2 channels, most TVs/systems will convert it to stereo, which is better than mono. Star Trek Original Series is what I grew up on. This is for fans old enough to know the original crew and hopefully young viewers give it a chance. About this Blu-ray set: This is a Steel book. I’m not a big fan of steel books but I admit it’s a beautiful looking package. I’m not so happy with the way the discs are stored. 4 discs on each side stacked directly on top of each other, but honestly in a steel book, I don’t see how it could have been done better. If it had been in a plastic case, each disc could have its own spindle and then you risk discs falling off due to how thin it all must be. About this presentation: Star Trek, the original series, is presented in it's original 4:3 aspect ratio with new enhanced special effects interlaced within the show replacing the old, outdated effects. The old effects show their age to the point that you wish they could look better. The new effects are respectful of the old effects and look very much like the old effects, but just so much better. The Gorn looks the same, but he can now blink. In “The Ultimate Computer” the power blast scene is greatly enhanced is very impressive looking, the ships are all recreated in CG which look fine even by today’s standards. The old “ship” effects suffered from poor matting & often had parts of the ship that disappeared, and they just don’t hold up at all. The best part is Paramount had the wisdom to give you BOTH old and new versions in a seamless branching design so you can switch back and forth between them for comparison if desired. I’m including some screenshots to show comparisons for readers. See if you can tell which is old and which is new. Trivia: Did you know, Chekov & Sulu did not appear in the same episode until the end of season 2. Chekov was not introduced until season 2. Overall this is a highly recommended package and worth the price of admission.

What can be said of the OS of Star Trek, just the best one. The NG was good, Voyager was good, Strange New Worlds is almost as good as OS.

Just to avoid confusion the Star Trek original series blu ray box set pictured in the blue box plays in the UK. I have just tested it in a UK version Playstation 5 and it looks super nice. It contains both the as aired special effects and the updated special effects version. I did read that the recent updated special effects versions had deleted dialogue ( possibly updated political correctness?) so you may want to play the original blu ray versions, or toggle between the two. So this should play in certainly Region B ( UK Europe) and maybe other regions

First time buying from Amazon Japan. It arrived sooner than I expected!
