Does this come with directions?

Yes but it's difficult to relate the pictures with the easel. U have to take time to study it but it is amazing. U can do just about anything with it and it holds up well. Helped we out with lectures I give Definitely recommend it 👌

How deep is the tray that holds the picture? How thick of a frame will it hold?

The lip across the front is only 1/8 in H and 1/2 " high at the back meaning any canvas or frame deeper than 7/8 inch will not sit in the tray of this easel, but on top. The tray is 16 inches wide side to side. Depth is only 1 inch at the bottom, but less at the top- because the metal is not at right angle. It will hold a canvas so it won't lean back against the the easel Sorry this app will not accept an image
