Yes! It does make a difference to use the HWT chalk, chalkboard and writing supplies. :o) Just like the entire curriculum, all Handwriting Without Tears hands-on supplies are specially created by occupational therapists to provide little hands with maximum benefit and ease. The slate, chalk, sponge bits, pencils and flip crayons are custom designed to provide learning without tears for children struggling with handwriting. With this occupational-therapist-designed program, children with visual, perceptual, fine-motor and other processing problems learn to write neatly and legibly. What's the big deal? Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) utilizes a two-lined approach to handwriting, providing a simple but clearly successful style. This style is developmentally based, works for children of all abilities, is easy to teach and multi-sensory. Handwriting Without Tears is also "lefty" friendly and includes easy-to-learn steps for readiness, printing and cursive with both teacher and students manuals. Give your kids the chance to be successful writers. The HWT Slate Chalkboard is used to teach and or remediate capitals and numbers The smiley face at the top left corner reinforces top-to-bottom, left-to-right directionality Children learn to write capitals and numbers in a consistent size on the 4 x 6 inches, to teach correct sizing. Improved finger dexterity from using HWT chalk, sponge bits, pencils and flip crayons help to develop good pencil grip and improve penmanship. **Please note the smoothness and small size of the chalk, pencils, sponge bits and crayons is purposeful and therapeutic. They are different from traditional school supplies for a reason. All items are designed to develop and increase necessary muscle strength in fingers and hands based on occupational therapy techniques.

You get the slate chalkboard too!
I thought I was just buying the chalk, pencils, and sponges, but it turns out this comes with the slate chalkboard too. I bought the slat chalkboard by itself for $12, so this is an excellent value! And, for those doubting whether they really need the HWT slate chalkboard or if they should just use a cheap synthetic one - go for the slate because it really makes for an entirely different sensory experience to fwel the way the chalk writes on this board. Definitely worth the money!

Fun and versatile. Good value.
We are using this along with the Handwriting without Tears app and books. Our OT highly recommends HWT and we have been really happy with the variety of practice methods and sensory experiences involved. After using the app, our daughter is thrilled to use the small slate board, chalk, and sponges. The instructions included with the chalkboard are pretty skimpy, but the app is good.I use reviews for every online purchase I make, so I try to include the most important features (good and bad) when I write reviews. If you find my review helpful, please mark that below.

Small pieces for a reason
Your browser does not support HTML5 video. I have used this in my classroom as a teacher and I am not using it at home. For people complaining about the size of the chalk/crayons/sponges-there is a very specific reason for this. The smaller the piece, the easier it is for kids to use correct grip on writing utensil. ✍I love that I did not have to purchase full curriculum. The way I am using it is I wrote the letter, kiddo traces with wet sponge, then kiddo traces with Chalk.Absolutely love it.

No no on the tiny cutesy tools.
The board is cute but the accessories are useless. For small children a specific size is needed. Not too small and not too big, though bigger would be easier. Both of my children, three years apart, struggle with the tiny sponge, tiny crayons and pencils. They are tiny, cute and use less.

Chalky but good
Great curriculum and supplies, I just wish the chalk had been packed in a separate bag. There is white chalk dust all over everything else- pencils, sponges, etc.

Slate board for handwriting practice
This is good handwriting practice but expensive in Amazon if you buy it. I bought an extra one from the HWT company it’s more cheaper $5.
