Can i use this poly filter by itself or do i still need to use a carbon filter with the poly filter?

You will still need to use carbon because this is really meant for saltwater tanks and is meant to be thrown away like every 2-3 days (Or more often if your tank is dirty) But it’s meant to replace say your filter socks.... and it does nothing else.... but it’s an amazing product!

can i use this in my canister?

Absolutely use it in a canister filter. It works great and is cheaper than the pads the filter comes with.

Can I use it by itself in place of my carbon filter cartridge while medicating the tank?

Yes works good for that ... can be cut to size…these are 3 large filters great for pond use…you can just use filter floss if have 50 gallon or smaller fish tank or buy smaller filter pads …I have 1500 gal pond these 3 last all year

Would i use this in place of the black sponges that come with the red sea max e series?

I use this product as a foam screen filter for my pump/filter. I’m not familiar with the Red Sea max filter system so I don’t want to feed you incorrect information. Hope this helps
