This is the book that I have been waiting for and Tori does not disappoint. I love how she lists specific songs, gives background into the origins of that song and successfully describes how the song relates to past and current events.I do not know if I will buy any future books directly from Amazon though. Although the book cover seems to be made of material that Is hard to smudge, the book that I received had several smudges (possibly grease or wax) on it. When I requested an exchange, they were prompt in both their response and shipment of a replacement book, however, the replacement book that I received also had the same type of smudges as the first (with in fact more smudges).

A poignant read with incredible political and creative themes woven beautifully throughout. I recommend purchasing the audiobook as well. I've been listening to Tori for over 15 years and have valued not only listening to her music but her thoughts and experiences as well.

3.5I do not read much non-fiction. By "much" I mean pretty much not at all. I've just always been more drawn into the fictional, often fantastical. The exception to this has always been Tori Amos. When her book [book:Tori Amos: Piece by Piece|536597] came out I was quick to grab it. She's always been a favorite artist of mine with her songs having such a layered mystery about them, I will always sit up and listen when it comes to hearing her process or, in her words, where the "Muses" take her in regards to crafting her songs. The deeper meaning that people can also relate to on a more surface level, and pick up new elements overtime is one she has always done really well. It's why her songs have endured.When I heard about Resistance there was no question that I would read this book. I had initially imagined it to take a more political stance, and while those moments definitely appear and have their place, I felt like the overall tone of the book is addressing an artist's obligation to speak out or for those that cannot speak out for themselves. Whether it's political or societal it all kind of overlaps.What always gets me when I think about Tori Amos is how long she's been doing what she's doing. I know she has a loyal following and is revered in the industry, but you don't hear about her as much as you do some of the more commercially successful artists. Nevertheless, though, I really liked hearing the stories about where she started out, where she came from, the battles she had to fight to get the message across that she wanted to tell despite dictates from the recording agency bigwigs.The story doesn't necessarily follow a linear path as Amos goes back and forth between older and newer songs. I enjoyed how she would relate an older song, for example <i>Silent All These Years</i> to the time in which is was released and/or written, then turn around and talk about it's accessibility to today's climate. How a song can transcend it's original intent to take on new meaning.Amos's writing feels, at times, eccentric, but anyone who is a true fan knows that's exactly all Tori. Often speaking on more of a theoretical level at times giving us full conversational exchanges she's had with her Muses or loved ones who have passed. But it's very easy to see where she's coming from, and like many of her songs, find your own way to relate to the issues.I kind of wish there was just a little bit more cohesiveness, just to hold the over arching message together a bit better. The going back and forth from past to present, while interesting, brought me out of the narrative quite a few times. When she picks up again in the present time, I would constantly have to remind myself where we left off before we delved back into the past.Otherwise, Resistance is an interesting look at a unique and trail-blazing artist, giving insights into fan favorite songs and speaking to the idea of art as a vehicle for change.

Having been a great admirer and fan of Tori since the first time I heard her in 1992, I have gained great insight and strength from her words and actions. Her second book is an important expose on what was being thought and felt during a time when we all realized that the things we had long taken for granted were not at all assured. All people, men and women, liberal and conservative, should read this book and take the time to honestly examine what their values are and if those in power truly exemplify them.

Tori Amos' new book Resistance is absolutely perfection. Even non Tori fans would enjoy it. It's beautifully written, empowering, moving, political, spiritual, magical, filled with tools we can use to navigate these strange times and so much more. I can't find the words to describe how amazing it is. My husband and I read it out loud the other night from cover to cover. There's an audio book version that she reads. I'll probably buy that too, it was that frigging good that I already want to hear her read it. 5 out of 5 stars!!!

This book showed up in perfect condition. So as far as the product is concerned, it’s great!The book itself has been an inspiration to read. I would highly recommend this to both Tori fans (EWFs) and to people who enjoy music/biographies. I am thrilled with this purchase and would absolutely consider getting the audio version, as well.

I've been a fan of Tori Amos since 2000. I feel so honored to have read both of her books now. I really love the way her brain works and appreciate the book from her.

Li este livro assim que ele foi lançado, durante o Lockdown. Embora esperasse algo mais semelhante à estrutura do Piece by Piece, Resistance possui uma direção um pouco diferente.Cada capítulo é permeado não somente com experiências da própria Tori sobre o que estava acontecendo ao seu redor em sua família, vida pessoal e carreira, como também ele gira em torno de por canções que não somente expressam a relação daquilo momento descrito na malha textual, como também marcam a tônica da tessitura da narrativa.Se você é um fã, como eu, esse livro nos dá insights sobre algumas canções que projetam novas lentes para compreender os mundos toriânicos.Há momentos bastantes intensos no livro, nos quais é muito difícil não se envolver com as imagens e a sequência de eventos que Tori evoca em seu contar de histórias.Acredito que pessoas que não acompanham a carreira da autora talvez não se interessem tanto pelo livro, mas acho que também seja igualmente difícil para elas não reconhecer a preciosidade que está disposta sobre as páginas.

Un bel libro

I didn't know what to expect from the book when buying it. I haven't really listened to Tori Amos over the years but saw the book mentioned in a Rough Trade advert and then reviewed in the Guardian. Being a music fan I thought I'd give it a go . Overall it was an excellent read with insights into Tori's musical development, as well as some thought provoking sections on the big social issues impacting on a!l of us. The overall message I took from the book is to be true to yourself and don't let others force you off your chosen path. Definitely recommend giving it a read, even if not a fan of the music.
